Haverford Fellowships and Research Opportunities
-
Beckman Scholars Program - This program, established
in 1998, is a prestigious national scholarship offered at
roughly 35 academically-rigorous colleges and universities
to recognize exceptional students with an interest in biomedical
research.
- Interdisciplinary
Science Scholars Program - This interdisciplinary
program of research and coursework is supported by a grant
from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It includes a broad
range of fields, including biochemistry, biophysics, and bioinformatics.
Interdisciplinary Scholars commit themselves to a course of
study which has a strong foundation in the experimental sciences
or mathematics, and explores upper level science and math
outside of the major.
- KINSC Student Externship Program- Funds will be available starting in 2008-2009 for summer research fellowships that may be used for domestic and international research experiences. Please contact Rob Fairman (rfairman@haverford.edu) for information about applying for these fellowships.
External Fellowships and Research Opportunities
- Research projects with part-study in West Africa and teaching
assistantship
(This program will not be available for the 2008-2009 school year.)
As part of an on-going project, a Haverford students may have the opportunity to conduct part of their thesis research in Ghana or Nigeria. Students will also serve as teaching assistants for a Molecular Biology workshop held at their research site for students, researchers and clinical scientists. - American Society for Microbiology summer research fellowships - A variety of summer research fellowships are available for research. See website for deadline and fellowship details.
- Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Summer Research Fellowships - A variety of summer research fellowships are available for research at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Some of the fellowships are for any area of biological sciences, while others specify fields such as cell biology, neurobiology, or developmental biology.
- NIH Summer Internship Program - The Summer Internship Program (SIP) at the NIH provides an opportunity to spend the summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Students sixteen years of age or older who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are currently enrolled at least half-time in high school, an accredited U.S. college or university or an accredited U.S. medical/dental school are eligible to apply. Students who have been accepted into a college or university may also apply.
- HHMI Janelia Undergradute Scholars - Our program gives undergraduates an opportunity to spend 10 weeks during the summer working as an intern in the lab of a mentor at Janelia Farm. The scholars are encouraged to attend weekly seminars and other events at Janelia. At the end of the session, each scholar will present their work at a symposium. Dates: June 9 - August 15, 2008. Students are required to spend a full 10 weeks at Janelia. We provide accommodations in our housing village. There is also an allowance of $4,500 for the 10-week period. The program also supports the most economical travel to and from Janelia.
- Columbia University Amgen Scholars Program - The program provides $4,000 stipends plus housing to 27 undergraduates to perform biology-related research in laboratories at Columbia University and Barnard College. In addition to working on original research, the students meet weekly with other undergraduates performing research at Columbia University to discuss and present their work.
- UCSF Summer internships in biophysics - Spend your summer in San Francisco at UCSF contributing your skills to cutting edge research in one of our labs as an undergraduate intern. The Graduate Group in Biophysics offers you the opportunity to sharpen your research skills and enhance your graduate applications. We invite college sophomores and juniors who are considering a career in academic research to apply to our two-month internship program. Successful applicants will be matched with a faculty mentor and graduate student for their research. We especially encourage those students who are identified with underrepresented minority groups, who are socio-economically disadvantaged, are first-generation college students, or whose undergraduate institution offers limited opportunities to do research. Applicants should be science majors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must be United States citizens or permanent US residents. A cost of living stipend and airfare will be awarded.
- Wyoming Summer Research Program in Computational Biology - The program will carry a stipend of $3500 to cover travel and living expenses for the summer.
- UT Southwestern Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program - This is an intensive summer research training experience designed for college students who are preparing for careers in biological research. Fellows spend ten weeks (beginning June 2, 2008 through August 8, 2008), pursuing individual research projects in the laboratories of UT Southwestern Graduate School faculty members. Fellows gain experience in modern research techniques, and have a chance to plan and execute an experimental strategy to answer a scientific question..

Outreach Programs
-
MAST - The MAST Program is a long-standing outreach program that provides laboratory experience and writing tutorials for 40-50 high school and middle school students from the Philadelphia area who are under-represented in the sciences. Through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Haverford College students prepare the course curricula, devise and teach the scientific labs, and work one-on-one with high school and middle school students as tutors.
