Entering her eighth year as head coach, Amy Bergin has stamped her team as a top Centennial Conference mainstay. She has directed the program to three consecutive conference championships (2006-08) and seven straight conference tournament appearances. Under Bergin, the Fords have made NCAA Tournament appearances each of the last three years, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2007.
Haverford claimed the 2008 Centennial Conference crown as the No. 2 seed with 3-1 victories over Johns Hopkins (semifinal) and Gettysburg (final). The Fords' success helped Bergin earn Centennial Coach of the Year honors.
Also during the 2008 campaign Rachel and Rebecca Salvo surpassed 1,000 career kills, becoming the fifth and sixth players to accomplish the feat under Bergin's eye.
During Coach Bergin’s tenure, the team has progressed every season, rewriting the record books with each new accomplishment. In 2004, Haverford posted its first conference playoff win. The previous season Bergin’s squad claimed the prestigious Seven Sisters Tournament championship. In her first season at the helm in 2002, the Fords defeated Gettysburg for the first time in program history.
Coach Bergin has produced 14 All-Conference athletes, one conference player of the year, six Mid-Atlantic All-Region players, two AVCA All-Americans, one AVCA National Player of the Week and one NCAA record holder for career total attempts. She also has had two Academic All-District athletes. The program boasts having only the second, four-time First Team All-Centennial Conference player in conference history.
Prior to coming to Haverford, Coach Bergin was an assistant coach at Marietta (Ohio) College for the volleyball and softball programs while earning an M.A. in education. She earned her undergraduate degree in Sports Management from Bethany College (W.Va.), graduating cum laude in 1999. As a volleyball and softball player at Bethany, she was recognized as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete and Outstanding Scholar-Athlete. Her performance is well documented in Bethany's record books.
A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Bergin resides in Lafayette Hill, Pa. with husband, Matt, and daughters Suzie and Megan.
Bergin is assisted by Jeremy Wright.
