Volleyball Defeats Neumann & Penn State-Altoona at Dutchman Tournament;
Fords Start 2007 with Program-Best 12 Straight Wins
ANNVILLE, PA - The 16th-ranked Haverford volleyball team continued its amazing start to its 2007 campaign with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-26, 30-22) win over Neumann and a 3-1 (30-26, 30-13, 19-30, 30-21) victory over Penn State-Altoona in its first two matches of the 2007 Flying Dutchman Tournament, hosted by Lebanon Valley College. The two wins improve Haverford's record to 12-0, its best start to a season in program history.
Against Neumann, sophomore middle hitter Rachel Salvo had 17 kills with a .441 hitting percentage and 22 digs. Senior middle hitter K'Lynn Solt had eight kills, while senior middle hitter Iris Early hit .308 in the match. Senior setter Emily Hinchcliff dished out 34 assists and freshman outside hitter Kelsey Cantwell tallied three aces.
Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Salvo paced Haverford to its four-game win over Penn State-Altoona with 22 kills and a .339 hitting percentage. Rachel Salvo added 16 kills and senior outside hitter Laura Nuyen had a team-high 34 digs along with 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Hinchcliff had 29 assists in the win.
Coach Bergin now has 114 wins early on in her sixth year as head coach of Haverford volleyball. She is only 25 match wins shy of tying the program record, set by Ann Koger (139 wins, 1985-1996).
Haverford will face host Lebanon Valley on Saturday at noon in the Flying Dutchman Tournament championship bracket. The Fords will play in the championship match at 4:00 p.m. if they survive LVC, and will face the winner of the York/PSU-Altoona match.
