#16 Haverford Volleyball Stays Perfect; Downs #22 Stevens & Elizabethtown
Hinchcliff Breaks Program Record for Career Assists at Haverford
HAVERFORD, PA - Head coach Amy Bergin's volleyball team improved its record to a perfect 10-0 overall after defeating visiting #22 Stevens 3-1 (30-26, 30-23, 20-30, 31-29) and Elizabethtown in a five-game thriller, 3-2 (30-19, 26-30, 30-26, 34-36, 15-11) Wednesday evening at Gooding Arena. Stevens and Elizabethtown fall to 6-1 and 7-1 overall on the season with the losses, respectively. Senior setter Emily Hinchcliff broke the Haverford volleyball program record for assists in a career with her 3,912th career assist in game four against Elizabethtown.
Sophomore middle hitter and current Centennial Conference Co-Player of the Week Rachel Salvo pounded down a match-high 18 kills with a .341 hitting percentage in Haverford's first match against #22 Stevens. Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Salvo added 13 kills and a match-high 22 digs with 13 kills and two aces. Senior outside hitter had 16 kills with a .371 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Laura Nuyen registered a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs.
Stevens was led by Melissa Rhode and Melanie Volk's 15 kills each.
Both teams defenses were on their game, as Haverford logged a .222 hitting percentage while Stevens had a .189 hitting percentage in the match.
Haverford and Elizabethtown split the first four games of its match, with the Fords winning games one and three and the Blue Jays taking games two and four.
Down 11-10 in game five, Haverford senior middle hitter K'Lynn Solt proved to be the spark the Fords needed down the stretch. Solt accounted for the Fords next two points, registering a kill and a solo block to pull Haverford ahead, 12-11. After a timeout was called by the Blue Jays, Rebecca Salvo pounded a kill and Solt assisted on a block with Rebecca Salvo to push the score to 14-11. An Elizabethtown attack error gave Haverford its 15th and match-winning point.
Rebecca Salvo finished with 27 kills with a .306 hitting percentage along with 24 digs. Rachel Salvo added 23 kills with a .327 hitting percentage and 11 digs while Nuyen contributed 24 digs and 16 kills. Solt registered seven kills and five blocks.
Hinchcliff dished out 62 assists versus Elizabethtown and 55 against Stevens, and currently has 3,917 assists in her career.
Haverford's 10-0 start to the 2007 matches the program record for most wins to start a season without a match loss. The 2000 team, which finished the season 30-6, started its campaign with a 10-0 overall mark.
The Fords will take on Neumann and Penn State-Altoona on Friday evening in the opening rounds of the Flying Dutchmen Tournament, hosted by Lebanon Valley.
Haverford defeated Neumann, 3-0, in its first match of the 2007 campaign and topped the Lions in last year's Flying Dutchmen Tournament, 3-0, en route to the 2006 tournament championship.
