Volleyball Wins Second Straight Haverford Invitational Championship;
Three Fords Named to All-Tournament Team
HAVERFORD, PA - The Haverford College volleyball team shut out every opponent on its way to a second-straight Haverford Invitational championship Sunday afternoon. The Fords swept Catholic, 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-23) Sunday morning and followed with a 3-0 (32-30, 30-22, 30-21) sweep over Villa Julie in the championship match. Senior outside hitter Laura Nuyen along with sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Salvo and sophomore middle hitter Rachel Salvo were named to the All-Tournament team as voted on by the coaches.
Haverford easily took care of Catholic in the morning, after defeating Neumann and Susquehanna on Saturday. The Fords hit a speed bump in game one of the championship match versus Villa Julie, rallying from a 27-15 deficit, taking game one, 32-30. The Fords also started slow in game two, falling behind 8-3 early on. However, Haverford outscored the Mustangs 27-14 throughout the rest of the game to take a 2-0 lead. With game three tied at 15, Haverford went on a 10-1 run en route to a 30-21 game three win, and its second tournament championship in as many years.
Senior setter Emily Hinchcliff had 37 assists in the win over Villa Julie along with a season-high 41 against Catholic earlier in the day.
Nuyen had 35 kills (2.92/game) in four matches of the tournament to earn All-Tournament status.
Rachel Salvo totaled 41 kills (3.42/game), with a hitting percentage of .255 and 43 digs (3.58/game) while Rebecca Salvo registered 49 kills (4.08/game) with a .320 hitting percentage, 12 service aces and 39 digs (3.25/game). Both Salvo's have earned All-Tournament honors for the second year in a row.
