Fords Topple Neumann & Susquehanna in
Opening Games of Haverford Volleyball Invitational


HAVERFORD, PA - The Haverford volleyball team hasn't lost a step since appearing in the 2006 NCAA Division III Tournament, cruising past Neumann 3-0 (30-12, 30-25, 31-29) and Susquehanna 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-15) in its first matches of the season in the first day of the 22nd annual Haverford Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday. Sophomore middle hitter Rachel Salvo registered ten kills in each match, while senior setter Emily Hinchcliff inched closer to the Haverford program assists record with 31 and 38 assists in each match, respectively.

After falling behind the Knights in game one 6-2, Haverford outscored Neumann by a 28-6 margin the rest of the way. The Fords fell behind again in games two and three by small margins early on, but recovered in the later part of the games to complete the sweep of the Knights.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Nuyen pounded out a a match-high 13 kills along with 12 digs. In addition to her ten kills, Rachel Salvo also tied a match-high with 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Cantwell had five service aces in her collegiate debut, while sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Salvo added seven kills and nine digs. Hinchcliff totaled 31 assists, adding four kills and six digs. Senior middle hitter K'Lynn Solt and senior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard had five and four kills, respectively, while Franny Glick picked up seven digs in the win.

Haverford registered a .351 hitting percentage as a team in games one and three en route to a 3-0 shutout of Susquehanna. Rebecca Salvo pounded 16 kills with a .556 hitting percentage and added 12 digs and an ace in the match. Solt and Nuyen each had seven kills, while Cantwell added three more service aces and six digs. Glick continued her steady defensive play from game one into game two with nine digs.

Hinchcliff added 38 assists in the Fords win over Susquehanna, giving her 3,570 in her career. She is 341 assists shy of Steph Frank '03, who is the current career program assist record holder with 3,911. Hinchcliff is also 831 assists short of the Centennial Conference record of 4,401 set by Nicole Evans of Gettysburg (1997-99).

Haverford is gunning for its second-straight Haverford Invitational Tournament crown and third in four years. In order to keep the championship at home, the Fords must defeat Catholic on Sunday at 10 a.m. followed by a victory over the first place team out of Pool B.
