Haverford Claims Dutchman Tournament Championship;
Emily Hinchcliff & Salvo Sisters Named All-Tournament
ANNVILLE, PA – The Haverford College volleyball
team took home the 15th annual Dutchman Tournament Championship
by narrowly defeated Eastern, 3-2, (30-22, 40-38, 32-34, 20-30,
15-13) late Saturday afternoon at tournament host Lebanon Valley
College. For their efforts this weekend, junior setter Emily Hinchcliff
along with freshman middle hitter Rachel Salvo and her twin sister,
outside hitter Rebecca Salvo, were recognized to the Dutchman Invitational
All-Tournament Team.
Haverford, coming off a 3-0 win over Ursinus
earlier in the day leading to the championship match, defeated Eastern
easily this past Wednesday, 3-0, but had a tougher time Saturday
with the Eagles. The Fords took game one, 30-22. The two teams battled
in game two, but Haverford eventually came out with the 40-38 win.
Down two games, the Eagles fought back with a 34-32 game three win,
and a 30-20 game four win. The Fords, however, edged the Eagles
15-13 in game five for the tournament crown.
Rebecca Salvo led the Fords with 27 kills and
a season-high 46 digs. Junior outside hitter Laura Nuyen registered
18 kills, 38 digs, and two blocks. Hinchcliff tallied 71 assists,
along with 20 digs and five service aces. Rachel Salvo had 26 digs,
while junior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard had 15 kills in the
five game victory.
The Fords, who improved to 13-1 overall with
the win, are off to their best start since the 2000 squad started
the season with a 14-1 overall record. The Fords finished with a
record of 30-6 in 2000. This afternoon's win over Eastern was the
90th victory for head coach Amy Bergin at Haverford, who is currently
in her fifth season. She is five wins shy of former coach Jim Haney
for second place in program history. Haney had 95 career wins in
five complete seasons (1997-2001).
Haverford returns to action at home on Friday,
September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. against Centennial Conference opponent
Franklin & Marshall.
