Haverford Advances to Dutchman Tournament Championship;
Allows Program Record Six Points in Game One Win
ANNVILLE, PA – The Haverford College volleyball
team allowed a program record six points in game one of a 3-0 (30-6,
30-20, 30-28) shut out victory over Ursinus College in a non-conference
match this morning at the Dutchman Invitational, hosted by Lebanon
Valley College. The Fords (12-1) improve their tournament record
to 3-0, and will face Eastern University in the Tournament Championship
at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The six points allowed in a game broke the
previous record of seven points allowed in game two of the Fords
3-0 win over Penn State-Berks on September 4th, 2004.
The Fords attack was well balanced against an outmatched Bears team.
Junior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard and freshman middle hitter
Rachel Salvo each had nine kills to lead the Haverford attack. Rachel
Salvo also contributed 18 digs and two blocks in the match. Rachel
Salvo’s twin sister, Rebecca, finished with eight kills and
ten digs, while juniors Iris Early, K’Lynn Solt and Lisa Perkins
each had five kills. Junior defensive specialist Carly Layfield
led the Fords defensive effort with 19 digs.
Junior setter Emily Hinchcliff tallied 39 assists and eight service
aces. Hinchcliff’s eight service aces are the most for a Haverford
player since Nina Mullenhard had nine aces against the previously
mentioned Penn State-Berks match on September 4th, 2004.
Haverford has shut out opponents in matches by a score of 3-0 in
eight of its first 13 matches of 2006. The Fords have won 80% of
their total games played in 2006, with a current record that stands
at 36-9.
Haverford last played Eastern earlier this week, and cruised to
a 3-0 (30-26, 30-20, 30-23) win.
