Bergin Wins 100th as Fords Shoot Down Bullets, 3-1;
Advance to Centennial Championship Match
LANCASTER, PA – Haverford
College head volleyball coach Amy Bergin earned her 100th career
coaching victory Saturday afternoon, as the third-seeded Fords (23-4)
defeated the second seeded and five-time defending champion Gettysburg
College Bullets (20-9), 3-1 (30-25, 30-28, 28-30, 30-26) Saturday
afternoon in a semifinal match of the 2006 Centennial Conference
volleyball Tournament, hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.
Junior outside hitter Laura Nuyen paced the Fords offensive attack,
registering a match-high 20 kills along with a team-high .314 hitting
percentage.
In the first game of the match, Gettysburg
jumped ahead 5-1 but was unable to hold onto the lead, as the Fords
offensive strike was too much for the Gettysburg defense. A strong
4-0 service run by freshman outside hitter Rebecca Salvo put Haverford
ahead for good at 30-25 and 1-0 in the match.
Rebecca Salvo's strong showing at the service line kept Haverford
ahead in the second game, as the Fords jumped ahead 5-1 over the
Bullets. Capitalizing on Gettysburg hitting errors, Haverford was
able to edge past the bullets 30-29 in the second game and go up
2-0 in the match.
The Bullets were able to narrowly get past the Fords in game three,
30-28. However, more strong serving by the Salvo twins proved to
be too much for the Gettysburg serve receivers, as Gettysburg fell
30-26, securing Haverford's 3-1 match victory.
Rebecca Salvo, a first-team All-Conference selection, tied a match-high
with three service aces, along with 15 kills, 14 digs and three
blocks. Junior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard also added 15 kills
and eight digs, while second team All-CC honoree, junior setter
Emily Hinchcliff, dished out a match-high 59 assists while collecting
13 digs.
The Fords win today snaps an eight-game losing streak versus the
Bullets. Haverford last defeated Gettysburg, 3-2, on October 5,
2002. Today's big win also erases a five-year, five match, losing
skid to the Bullets in Centennial Conference postseason tournament
play. Until Saturday afternoon, Gettysburg has ended Haverford's
season in every year since 2001.
Bergin's 100 career wins as head coach of the Fords rank second
in program history. Ann Koger (1985-96) has the most career victories
as head coach of the volleyball Fords with 139.
Haverford will look for its first-ever Centennial Conference Championship
and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament as they take
on top-seeded tournament host Franklin & Marshall (19-9 overall)
Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Franklin & Marshall defeated fifth-seeded
McDaniel, 3-1, in the second match of the semifinals Saturday afternoon.
The Fords will look to avenge a 3-1 loss at the hands of F&M
back on September 22, in their only meeting during the 2006 regular
season.
