Entering his 33rd season at the helm of Haverford's track and cross country programs. Tom Donnelly was himself an All-American in both sports at Villanova University. A top college distance runner from 1966 to '69, he helped lead the Wildcats to three consecutive NCAA cross country championships and one NCAA track title.
After successful coaching stints at Archbishop Wood and La Salle College high schools in Philadelphia's Catholic League, Donnelly has taken Haverford to 61 Middle Atlantic and Centennial Conference championships in track and cross country, including 48 out of the last 49 since 1991. Donnelly's runners have earned 110 cross country and track & field All-American awards since 1980 including 24 individual NCAA championships and an NCAA championship relay team.
Along with his Haverford duties, Donnelly has coached several Olympians in recent years. Under Donnelly's tutelage, Sydney Maree set three American records (1,500, 2,000, and 5,000 meters) in 1985. Another protege, Villanova head coach Marcus O'Sullivan, became only the third man ever to run 100 sub-4 miles, won three world championships and set a world record in the indoor 1500 meters, while fellow Irish Olympian Gerry O'Reilly has posted top times as well. Donnelly guided Haverford's most recent star, Karl Paranya '97, to the 1996 and 2000 Olympic trials in the 1,500 meters, and the first sub-4 mile (3:57.6) in NCAA Division III history in 1997. Under Tom's guidance, Seamus McElligott won NCAA championships in cross country, the indoor 5k, and the outdoor 5k and 10k while also competing in the Division I cross country championships and gaining All-American status there as well. Kevin Foley won three consecutive 1,500m championships from 1981-1983.
Former Westtown School head coach Rob Upton is a certified strength and conditioning coach who will continue to train the track & field team's throwers. Upton's most recent protege, Tom Reynolds, has graduated after setting numerous records and winning conference titles, but he has already continued his work with Joe Awantang, the 2005 indoor and outdoor conference champion in the shot put.
Former St. James High School track and cross country coach, Bob Hasson '83, enters his second season as coach of Haverford's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. Hasson coached countless top high school performers in all areas of track and field, during his years at St. James.
Hall of Fame Coach Irv Mondschein, former University of Pennsylvania head coach and olympic decathlete, continues to volunteer his expertise in the field events and hurdles.
Jossi Fritz-Mauer '06, volunteers his vast knowledge of distance training to the team's large group of middle distance and distance runners.
