Fords Fall 7-1 in Rain Shortened Match
HAVERFORD, PA -The
Haverford College men’s tennis team suffered its first loss
of the season Thursday afternoon as they fell, 7-1, to The College
of New Jersey, snapping its 11-dual meet winning streak. Haverford,
ranked 30th in Division III and seventh in the Atlantic South
Region, falls to 11-1 overall on the season while the Lions, ranked
ninth in the Northeast region, improve to 9-1 on the year. Thursday's
match was cut short due to rain when number two singles was in
its second set.
The Fords fell behind early in the match, falling in all three
doubles matches. The team of senior co-captain Elmar Trust and
junior Marc Adelberg fell to the Lions Eric Ferriere and Corey
Ball, 8-6, while sophomore's Marc Rudolph and Evan Stiegel dropped
an 8-5 decision to Jeremy Eckardt and Andrew Cossaboom. Sophomore's
Alex Buxbaum and Tom Kinrade, ranked second in the Atlantic South
and ninth in Division III in doubles, came up on the short side
of a 8-2 decision to Michael Klimchak and Roger Mosteller, ranked
tenth in the Northeast region.
Trust fell at number three singles, 6-3, 6-4, but Rudolph earned
the Fords first and only point at number six with a 6-1, 6-2 win
over Cossaboom to make the match 4-1. Klimchak, ranked fourth
in the Northeast region and 15th in Division III in singles, topped
Buxbaum 6-1, 6-4, for TCNJ's fifth and match deciding point. Haverford
sophomore Steve Feder fell to Eckardt, 6-2, 6-2, while Stiegel,
ranked 12th in singles in the Atlantic South, fell to Ball in
three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Kinrade and Mosteller's match at number two singles was not completed
due to rain. Their match does not count towards their records.
Haverford will look to rebound on Tuesday when they travel to
Centennial foe Johns Hopkins. The Fords and the 21st-ranked Blue
Jays are the only two teams that are still unbeaten in Centennial
competition.
