Strength and Conditioning: Internship
A Haverford College Strength & Conditioning Internship is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to develop the hands-on skills necessary to start a successful career as a Strength & Conditioning coach, sports performance specialist, personal trainer, or fitness center director.
The student will gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience in exercise technique, program design, and facility management. Applicants should be working towards a degree in exercise science or related field.
Responsibilities: Successful candidates will assist the Head Strength and Conditioning coach in all aspects of training for 21 Division III programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting the strength and conditioning coach with the design and implementation of sport-specific strength, speed, agility, and quickness programs. Additional responsibilities include weight room supervision, daily upkeep and maintenance of equipment, and any other duties as assigned by the strength and conditioning coach. Interns are available to work 10 to 30 hours per week.
At the conclusion of the internship the student will be able to:
- Develop periodized training programs encompassing routines that improve athletic performance while preventing injury. Daily sessions should include a warm-up, core training, plyometric, sport-specific resistance, agility, and speed exercise, and post workout flexibility/recovery session.
- Understand the differences in program design and implementation for a variety of athletics teams throughout various phases of their training (in-season, off-season, pre-season).
- Teach all of the movements involved in our program including Olympic Lifts.
- Understand and counsel on sport nutrition.
- Interact with and train a general population (non-athlete students, staff & faculty) in a professional manner.
- Manage and upkeep a newly constructed, state of the art fitness center
Required: Working towards a bachelor's degree in exercise science or a related field, and a certification with NSCA-CSCS. Preferred: bachelor's degree, CSCS (or acceptable and related) certification. Applications are accepted year round to fill 2 internship positions each semester.
Compensation: Possible college credit and valuable experience with both collegiate athletes and the general population, managing a fitness center, and guidance in pursuing a career in Strength and Conditioning or a related field. This is an unpaid internship.
