HAVERFORD, Pa. — Haverford College announced that it will open a new turf field named in honor of former Athletic Director Dana Swan this fall.
Swan spent 35 years at Haverford, serving in a number of different capacities. He served as football coach from 1967-1972, lacrosse coach from 1972-1986, Athletic Director from 1969-1982 and Associate Director of Admissions from 1982 until his retirement in June 2002. Swan founded the men’s lacrosse team in 1972 which featured current President Stephen G. Emerson ’74. The program that Swan began made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008.
“Swan Field is the perfect companion to our world-class Douglas B. Gardner ’83 Integrated Athletic Center,” said Director of Athletics Wendy Smith. “Our new FieldTurf surface will enable our student-athletes to train and to compete in a facility constructed to support their quest for excellence.”
Swan Field will have a synthetic FieldTurf surface used by a number of professional and collegiate teams throughout the country. The field will provide a safer surface for Haverford’s varsity team practices and games and reduce the use of water and chemicals found in pesticides and fertilizers.
The use of lights will expand both practice and competition opportunities and aid the reduction of missed class time by allowing flexibility in scheduling games and practices no longer limited by daylight hours. Swan Field will serve as a competition site for field hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse as well as a practice site for the aforementioned teams and men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and softball. Construction on Swan Field began the week of May 26 and the field is slated to be complete by September 1, 2008.
The brief dedication ceremony will take place just prior to the Noontime start of the September 6 field hockey home opener against Rowan (N.J.) University.
