Men's cross country kicks off season with strong showing

09/24/09 – Haverford's men put their right foot forward in a strong outing against several Division I teams at the Main Line Invite.
HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Fords men’s cross country team went head to head with Villanova on the Haverford Alumni Course Thursday afternoon in the annual Main Line Invitational. The Scarlet and Black nearly claimed half of the top 20 spots in the 4-mile race that also included teams from UPenn, The College of New Jersey, Swarthmore and Gwynedd-Mercy.
Of the first 21 runners to finish, nine wore the white singlet of Haverford led by the trio of Joseph Carpenter, Anders Hulleberg and Andrew Lanham who were within three seconds of each other and finished eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively, out of 123 runners.
Andrew Sturner, Jordan Schilit and Chris Southwick formed another mini-pack taking 15th, 16th and 17th place and were within seven second of each other. They were followed closely behind by the final trio of Fords, Ivo Milic-Strkalj, Lucas Fuentes and Phil Eiseman, who filled the 19th, 20th and 21st spots for Haverford.
Daniel Lewis led a group of seven consecutive Villanova runners across the finish with a winning time of 19 minutes, 50.76 seconds. Haverford’s Carpenter was the next racer to finish, completing the course in 20:16.82.
Next up for Haverford will be the Brooks-Paul Short Run, one of the largest college meets on the East coast and one that will include six ranked Division I teams this year, hosted by Lehigh University on October 2.
