LANCASTER, Pa. – First-year head women’s lacrosse coach Julie Shaner Young was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year on Thursday as announced by the league office. In addition, freshman Josie Ferri earned second-team and senior Liz Koelmel was named Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference.
Under Young’s direction, Haverford nearly garnered the fifth playoff spot which would have capped off a tremendous turnaround for a team that won just one conference game last season. Young led the Fords to a 10-6 record which was the first winning record posted by the program since a 9-7 campaign in 2005. The 10 wins are the most in a single-season since 2000 when that team also finished with 10 victories. The four conference wins were the most by the program since 2005.
Ferri finished her rookie campaign with team-bests in goals (43), points (52), free position goals (7) and draw controls (51). She was seventh in the Centennial with 2.87 goals per game and third with 3.40 draw controls per contest.
Koelmel was third on the team in goals (27), assists (8) and points (35). The senior scooped up a team-leading 44 ground balls and led the Fords defensively with 24 caused turnovers. Koelmel also had a knack for clutch goals, netting a team-high three game-winners on the season and scoring HC’s first goal six times. She started 63 of 64 games in her career and tallied 112 goals, 155 points, 140 ground balls and 83 caused turnovers.
