Jamal Elliott '96 to receive Forman Award

The former guard for the Fords' men's basketball team will receive the award on Saturday, January 24 prior to the men's basketball game.
Jamal Elliott ’96 has been named the recipient of the 2008 Lawrence Forman ’60 Award. Elliott will be honored prior to the start of the men's basketball game on Saturday, January 24. A reception will follow the game in the Swan Multipurpose Room of the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.
Elliott is currently the Dean of Students at the Wissahickon Charter School in the Germantown area of Philadelphia. More than eighty percent of the students at Wissahickon live below the poverty line and Elliott works closely with the students and their families to motivate and celebrate each student. He also volunteers to coach the fledgling basketball team at the school.
Elliott finished his playing career at Haverford with 1,136 career points and helped guide the team to its first ever Centennial Conference playoff berth in 1996. Also in his senior season, Elliott was second in the league in scoring, seventh in steals in Division III and 10th in assists in the nation.
One of the finest point guards ever to wear the Scarlet and Black, a number of Elliott’s records still stand. He holds the career record for steals (227) and demolished the career record for assists (486) before it was broken in 2006. Elliott holds the single season record for assists (168), assists per game (7.3), steals (78) and steals per game (3.4). He also set two single game records in steals (12) and assists (13).
At the conclusion of his senior year Elliott received the Haverford College Alumni Varsity Cup, an award given to the outstanding athlete in the senior class. He shared the award with teammate and fellow 1,000 point honoree Chris Guiton ‘96.
Lawrence Forman was one of the most versatile and graceful athletes in Haverford's athletic history. He was the second Ford to surpass the 1,000 career points plateau in basketball and earned All-American honors as a goalie in his final two years at the College under legendary soccer coach Jimmy Mills.
The Forman Award is designed to recognize someone whose athletic career in college and subsequent devotion to serving society was reminiscent of Larry.
