Men's Lacrosse Sends Two to Euro Championships

8/11/08 - The Haverford men's lacrosse program will have one current and one former player playing in the 2008 European Championship.
HAVERFORD, Pa. - It's not every day that a program has a player on a national team. It just so happens this year, though, that the Haverford College men's lacrosse program has two.
Playing in the 2008 European Championship will be Haverford rising senior Jamey van Opstal (Langley, Va.) and fomer Ford Joe Caulfield (Drexel Hill, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep). Van Opstal, a defender, is on the squad representing the Netherlands while Caulfield, also a defender, will try to help Ireland to the '08 title.
Van Opstal has played in 26 games for the Fords in his three years with the progam and collected 17 ground balls.
Caulfield started 13 games in his final season at Haverford in 2002 and scored once while being credited with 36 ground balls.
The championship, held in Lahti, Finland, this summer, is contested every four years on the even years between the World Championships.
In 2004, the Ireland squad finished seventh in the final championship rankings with tne Netherlands coming in ninth. England captured the top spot followed by Germany in the runner-up slot.
