3/4/06 CSA Individual Championships at Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. -- Haverford sophomore Alex Salton
was knocked out of the Molloy Division main draw by top-seeded
Harvard freshman Verdi DiSesa of nearby Wynnewood, Pa., 9-1, 9-1,
9-2, then eliminated from the consolation bracket by another Philadelphian,
Brown senior David Krupnick, 9-5, 9-3, 9-3.

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Fords finished their season
sixth in the eight-team Conroy Division and 30th in the nation,
edging MIT on victories at the last five positions by Paul Koprowski,
Mike Montesano, Evan Stiegel, Rohan Dalal and Mark Rubin, then
falling to Hobart despite wins from Koprowski, Stiegel, Dalal
and Rubin.
Montesano had a decisive five-game win Saturday
versus MIT, winning 6-9, 9-4, 8-10, 9-5, 9-3, while Stiegel took
things to the other extreme Sunday against Hobart, winning 9-0,
9-0, 9-0, for the Fords.

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Sam Morgan, David Poolman and
Evan Stiegel all won in three straight games at numbers 2-4-7,
respectively, but the Fords were felled by defending Conroy Trophy
champion Rochester in Friday's quarterfinals.
Griffin Vanze won his exhibition match at number
10 in three straight as well. Paul Koprowski lost a hotly contested
match to Rochester #5 Ori Goldman, 8-10, 9-0, 9-4, 7-9, 9-1.
The Fords were set to meet MIT in Saturday afternoon's
consolation semifinals, then face either Hobart or Washington
on Sunday.

HAVERFORD -- Sam Morgan, Jason Bazarsky, David Poolman
and Paul Koprowski never trailed in games during their victories
at numbers 2-3-4-5, and Evan Stiegel, Mark Rubin, Griffin Vanze
and Marc Adelberg blanked their respective opponents in the bottom
half of the lineup as host Haverford (8-9) swept Fordham and Columbia
Saturday.
Alex Salton split on the day as he rallied to defeat
Rams #1 Phil Bednarczyk, 7-9, 0-9, 9-6, 9-1, 9-0, before suffering
an afternoon setback against the Lions' Nik Trikha.
Rohan Dalal had the Fords' only other come from
behind win on the day as he downed CU #7 John Komfonis, 7-9, 9-4,
9-3, 9-2.
Mike Montesano endured a 10-8, 9-3, 7-9, 5-9, 9-5
decision against Fordham #6 Chas Sterken, but fell in equally
tough fashion vs. Columbia #5 Hank Sackler, 8-10, 9-7, 9-7, 9-6.

national intercollegiate rankings, blitzed host Haverford (6-9)
Wednesday afternoon, with Evan Stiegel putting up the biggest

HAVERFORD -- Evan Stiegel and Marc Adelberg were
four-game winners at numbers 6 and 9, respectively, while #1 Alex
Salton and #4 Sam Morgan suffered four-game losses against the
Jumbos.
Jason Bazarsky, David Poolman and Paul Koprowski
each took one game before falling to their Hamilton opponents
at numbers 2-4-5, and Morgan lost to Continentals #3 John Frazier,
10-9, 4-9, 9-6, 9-10, 9-4. Stiegel had the best match for the
Fords Sunday against the Midshipmen, as he fell to Navy #5 Kit
Zipf, 10-8, 9-5, 9-2.

HAVERFORD -- Franklin & Marshall, 9-5 overall
and #15 in the intercollegiate rankings, swept host Haverford
(6-5) with nine 3-0 victories Wednesday evening.
Evan Stiegel scored the most points among the Fords'
players, falling, 9-7, 9-4, 9-3, to Dips #6 Patrick Pasquariello.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Paul Koprowski, Mike Montesano,
Egan Stiegel, Griffin Vanze and Mark Adelberg each won one game
at number 3-5-6-8-9 versus Northwestern, but the Fords could not
muster a point versus the Wildcats.
David Poolman, Montesano, Stiegel, Mark Rubin, Vanze
and Adelberg swept positions 4 through 9 against Penn State, with
the most closely contested matches won by Poolman, 7-9, 9-2, 10-9,
9-3, and Rubin, 6-9, 9-3, 9-1, 4-9, 9-2. Koprowski dropped a tough,
9-3, 5-9, 9-6, 8-10, 9-4 decision to Nittany Lions #3 Pete Ishihara.

HAVERFORD -- Senior captain David Poolman and freshman
Evan Stiegel were the only triple-winners for Haverford (5-3)
in weekend competition, with Poolman sweeping all three of his
opponents at number 5 and Stiegel winning in four, four and three
games, respectively, against Vassar #8 Ryan McGinley-Stempel,
UVA #7 Nick Flanagan and PSU #7 Doug Harsh.
Other double-winners in Sunday's matches were Alex
Salton, Paul Koprowski, Mike Montesano and Mark Rubin at numbers
1-4-6-8, respectively. Jason Bazarsky picked up a three-game win
versus Cavaliers #2 Patrick Whelan, while Sam Morgan was an easy
winner against Nittany Lions #3 Pete Ishihara. Marc Adelberg,
who earned a default point against Virginia, won his ninth-position
match against Penn State, 9-4, 9-1, 7-9, 1-9, 9-7.

HAVERFORD -- Senior captain David Poolman earned
a pair of five-game victories and led host Haverford to its first
two wins of the season Saturday afternoon.
Poolman defeated Scarlet Knights #3 Saad Rathore, 3-9, 9-3, 2-9,
9-8, 9-3, and Lions #4 William Lai, 9-6, 10-8, 6-9, 5-9, 9-6.
Freshman Evan Stiegel was also a double-winner for the Fords (2-2),
as were junior Mark Rubin and sophomore Marc Adelberg.
Jason Bazarsky, Paul Koprowski and Mike Montesano joined Poolman
with their own five-game wins at numbers 2, 3 and 5 against Columbia,
while Karan Shah and Adil Khan easily captured their respective
ninth-position matches against the Knights and Lions.

HAVERFORD -- More than 100 enthusiastic fans were
in attendance as the "Ford" championship of men's college
squash was decided Sunday afternoon at the Gardner Center.
The West Coast "Ford"--Stanford--defeated
the Eastern Fords, 8-1, in a match that was closer than the final
score indicates.
Haverford (1-2) received a point at #9 on a forfeit
to Ben Zussman '08, while Alex Salton '08 held a match point in
the # 1 spot before bowing, 10-8, in the fifth game.
Evan Stiegel '09 at #6 and Jason Bazarsky '08 at
#2 also extended Stanford rivals considerably.
President Tom Tritton threw out the first ball,
the Humtones performed the national anthem, and Stanford Coach
Mark Talbott won a one-game exhibition match against Haverford
alum Tim Saint '02.

ANNAPOLIS -- Haverford College men's squash (1-1)
split its opener at the U.S. Naval Academy Saturday, bowing to
Connecticut College, 8-1, and then rebounding to win over the
University of Washington, 6-3. Mark Rubin '07 was the Fords' double
winner, while Jason Bazarsky '08, Mike Montesano '07, Rohan Dalal
'08, Evan Stiegel '09 and Karan Shah '09 added victories to Rubin's
vs. the Huskies.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Allyson Scherb, Emma Bartlett,
Devon Hercher and Jen Millman swept their respective Northeastern
and George Washington opponents at numbers 5 through 8 in three
straight games Saturday, clinching Pool 2 and propelling Haverford
into the Epps Division championship match.
The Fords were runners-up to Pool 1 winner Virginia
Sunday morning in determining 25th-place in the nation, getting
victories from Bartlett, in four games, and Millman and number
9 Julie Herskowitz, in three.
Charlotte Koeniger, Elif Sen, Sarah Powell and Betsy
Schmidt were all winners at numbers 1 through 4 in the Northeastern
blowout, with Sen's come-from-behind, 4-9, 9-3, 9-5, 9-3 win the
only close match. Sen and Powell both won in four games against
the Colonials, who had defeated the Fords twice during the regular
season.
With four wins at non-scoring number 10, Sarah Hendry
joined Bartlett and Millman as Haverford's only undefeated players
in the tournament.
2/24/06 CSA Howe Cup Team Championships at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Betsy Schmidt and Emma Bartlett
won in four games at numbers 4 and 6, respectively, and Allyson
Scherb, Devon Hercher, Jen Millman and Julie Herskowitz won in
three straight at numbers 5-7-8-9 as Haverford swept the bottom
six positions to defeat Smith Friday evening.
Schmidt's 4-9, 10-9, 10-9, 9-6 win over Becky Spalding
and Herskowitz's 9-1, 9-1, 9-6 sweep of Mary Opler reversed earlier
losses to those same opponents in the Fords' 5-4 loss to Smith
in the Seven Sisters tourney at Haverford on Jan. 21.
Charlotte Koeniger and Sarah Powell extended their
respective Smith opponents to four games at numbers 1 and 3, and
Elif Sen suffered a tough three-game loss, 10-8, 10-8, 9-1, at
number 2. Scottish exchange student Sarah Hendry was a winner
in three straight in the non-scoring, number 10 match.
If the Fords defeat Northeastern and George Washington
in Pool 2 Saturday, they will face winner of Pool 1 (Colgate,
Virginia or Wellesley) Sunday morning for the Epps Division championship
and a Top 25 national ranking.

LANCASTER -- Jenny Millman and Julie Herskowitz
were double-winners in the tri-match Saturday at F&M, with
#8 Millman winning twice in three straight games and Herskowitz
pulling off a 4-9, 1-9, 9-0, 9-4, 9-2 win over F&M #9 Roshni
Lodhia.
Elif Sen won in four games against GW's Pilar Pavis,
but fell in five to F&M #2 Davina Buckley. Sarah Powell, Emma
Bartlett, Jen Hurford and Devon Hercher all earned a victory against
the Colonials.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Fresh off her all-Seven Sisters
performance at eighth position, junior Allyson Scherb moved up
to #7 and won, 9-1, 9-2, 4-9, 9-2, for the Fords' only point in
the opening match versus the Camels.
Scherb lost her first collegiate decision as part
of the sweep by the Continentals, but she was one of four Haverford
players to earn a point against the Cardinals. Scherb and #6 Emma
Bartlett were three-game winners in the final match, with #2 Charlotte
Koeniger and #9 Sarah Hendry each rallying from a game-down to
win in five.

HAVERFORD -- Junior Allyson Scherb (South Bend,
Ind./John Adams HS) became Haverford's first all-tournament selection
as the third-place Fords recorded their highest team finish in
the six-year history of the Seven Sisters Championships.
Scherb breezed past Wellesley #8 Miranda Brintnell,
9-1, 9-0, 9-0, Sunday morning, then rallied to defeat Kalyani
Iyer of team champion Vassar, 6-9, 9-3, 9-4, 9-4, in the afternoon
to complete her perfect, 4-0 round-robin record. Entering the
championships -- the first hosted by Haverford since the inaugural
tournament in 2000 -- the Fords' best finishes had been fourth-place
in 2001 and 2003.
Charlotte Koeniger and Sarah Powell won hard-fought,
five-game decisions against Wellesley's #2 Ayoko Kubodera and
#3 Emily Oldshue, respectively, while Jen Millman and Julie Herskowitz
never trailed in their wins at numbers 7 and 9. Devon Hercher
won all four of her weekend matches in three straight games to
earn top honors among the non-scoring #10 players.

Scherb were double-winners at positions 6-7-8, respectively, as
depth nearly proved the difference for the hosts in tough Day
One losses at the Seven Sisters Championship in Haverford's new
Gardner Center courts.
Bartlett rallied to defeat Smith's Sarah Pritchard
in the morning, 2-9, 9-6, 9-6, 8-10, 9-6, then battled back again
for a 7-9, 9-7, 10-9, 10-8 win against Holyoke's Holly Gage in
the afternoon. Millman and Scherb won both of their matches in
three straight games, while Julie Herskowitz rebounded from a
five-game loss versus Smith #9 Mary Opler with a 9-7, 4-9, 9-5,
3-9, 9-6 win over MHC's Danielle Babcock.
Jen Hurford won, 9-4, 9-4, 10-9, against Smith #5
Huong Nguyen to capture the only point for the Fords' top five
in Saturday's portion of the five-team round-robin. Numbers 1
through 4 Elif Sen, Charlotte Koeniger, Sarah Powell and Betsy
Schmidt will give it their best in Sunday's matches versus Wellesley
and three-time defending Sisters champion Vassar.
HAVERFORD -- Emma Bartlett, Jenny Millman, Allyson
Scherb and Devon Hercher were double-winners for the Fords (3-2),
taking matches from their Brewer and Cavalier opponents at numbers
5-7-8-9, respectively.
Julie Herskowitz won, 9-1, 7-9, 9-6, 9-5, against
Vassar #6 Lilia Toveska, while Sara Powell won, 5-9, 9-2, 10-9,
10-8, against UVA #3 Nancy Chen to provide decisive points for
the hosts. Betsy Schmidt (#2) and Jen Hurford (#4) both lost in
five games in Sunday's match against Virginia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Frosh Sarah Powell's 9-7, 4-9,
9-1, 7-9, 9-4 victory over GW #3 Lexi Miller proved to be the
difference as the Fords (1-2) stunned the host Colonials on Saturday.
Jenny Millman, Allyson Scherb and Alexandra Wilson-Elizondo won
the last three positions in four, three and four games, respectively,
and Julie Herskowitz accepted a 9-6, 6-6 (ret.) victory over GW
#5 Leah Sherman for Haverford's first point.
The Fords had been beaten by the Colonials, 6-3, in the opening
tri-match at the Gardner Center courts on Nov. 12, with wins that
day coming from Emma Bartlett, Millman and Scherb at numbers 6-7-8.

HAVERFORD -- Playing at home the women's team inaugurated
the Gardner Center courts with a twin bill vs. F&M and George
Washington U. The Fords bowed 7-2 to the Diplomats and 6-3 vs.
GW yesterday.
Against F&M, the two Haverford points were scored
by Allyson Scherb '07 at #8 with a 9-2, 9-1, 9-0 victory and Alexandra
Wilson-Elizondo at #9 by 9-5, 9-2, 9-0. Devon Hercher '08 won
an exhibition match.
Scherb repeated with a #8 win vs. GW, 10-8, 9-7,
5-9, 10-9. The other HC points came from Emma Bartlett '08 at
# 6 (3-9,9-3, 9-3, 9-3) and Jenny Millman '09 at #7 (1-9, 9-7,
9-4, 9-1).
#3 Sarah Powell '09,#4 Julie Herskowitz '06 and
#9 Wilson-Elizondo extended opponents to four games.
Associate Director of Athletics Penny Hinckley threw
out the first ball and an exhibition between pro squash players
Dani Davis and Amy Milanek highlighted the opening-day festivities.
