Haverford seniors Nora Spriggs and Sarah Nagle
have become Haverford's first-ever all-regional softball
players. The Haverford co-captains were named to the third
team of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Eastern
regional team.
Spriggs was Centennial Conference Player of
the Year and first team All-CC as a designated player this
spring, while Nagle plays centerfield for the Fords and
was Second-Team All-Centennial Conference. Both players
are also regulars on the Centennial Academic/Athletic Honor
Roll.
Fords Bounced From NCAA Tournament After 3-1 Loss to Moravian
Speedy leadoff hitter Sarah Nagle beat out
a bunt single, stole second, then scored on a wild throw
by the catcher in Haverford's opening at-bat, but Moravian
later tied the game, then scored twice in the seventh to
advance in the NCAA Division III regional playoffs.
The Greyhounds (34-8) got the decisive runs
on a leadoff double -- the third hit of the game by Beth
Paly --plus two singles and two Haverford defensive miscues.
The Fords (26-17), batting last as the home team, were unable
to mount a threat in their final chance.
Nora Spriggs singled up the middle to lead
off Haverford's second inning, and was sacrificed to second
by Allison Frank, but Moravian's Kristie Pellicani (10-2)
retired Sam Fontinell and Gray Vargas without any more damage.
Fontinell pitched out of a two-on, two-out situation in
Moravian's half of the second, getting a ground out to shortstop
Erica Davies.
In the top of the third, Moravian had two
out with one on, but the final batter of the inning lined
out to Nagle in center. Nagle led off the bottom of the
third with her fourth bunt single of the tournament, but
a strikeout and two fly balls ended the frame. Moravian
went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, then with two
out in the Fords' half, Spriggs reached base on an error
and Fontinell walked before Vargas flied out to right field.
Moravian started off its fifth with a Paly
solo home run, followed by a walk, but reliever Julia Iodice
retired the side, 1-2-3, the same fate that befell Haverford
in the bottom of the inning. Moravian went down easily in
the sixth against Becky Garibotto (11-5), and the Fords
came oh-so-close to breaking through. With one out, Natalie
Richman walked and Spriggs again reached on error. Frank
then grounded to second and Moravian made the play at the
plate to nip Richman with the potential lead run. Garibotto
then grounded out third to first to end the potential go-ahead
threat, just before the Greyhounds put together their own
game-winning rally on two unearned runs.
Moravian had swept an early season doubleheader
between the non-conference regional opponents by scores
of 10-3 and 5-0.
Spriggs Named Centennial Conference Player of the Year;
Haverford Places Seven on All-CC Team
Senior Nora Spriggs has been named Centennial
Conference Player of the Year and six other Fords have received
all-conference recognition after leading Haverford to the
league's regular-season and tournament titles.
Spriggs, a native of Atlanta, Ga., earned
Player of the Year and First Team All-Centennial Conference
honors as a designated player after hitting .333 with 11
doubles, a homerun and 25 RBI and compiling seven wins and
a 2.95 ERA in 57 innings on the mound as well. She is the
first Haverford softball player to earn player of the year
honors.
Frosh Natalie Richman joined Spriggs as a
first team all-conference selection. A first baseman from
Upper Saddle River, N.J., Richman hit .317 with five doubles,
two homeruns and 17 RBI this year.
Becky Garibotto, Erica Davies, Lindsey Sullivan
and Sarah Nagle were honored as second team all-CC selections.
Garibotto, a pitcher from Edison, N.J., was 11-3 on the
year with a 2.43 ERA in 109.1 innings on the mound. Davies
hit .308 with eight doubles, four triples, a homerun and
19 RBI as the Fords' starting shortstop, while Sullivan
led Haverford in batting average (.416), doubles (13), homeruns
(2) and RBI (27).
Frosh Dana Irshay earned honorable mention
all-conference recognition after hitting .367 with a team-high
51 hits and 17 stolen bases.
The Fords (24-15) make their first-ever NCAA
Tournament appearance on Thursday, May 11 at 2 p.m. against
Salisbury University (32-6), last year's D-III runner-up,
at Salisbury University.
A victory over Salisbury would pit the Fords
against the winner of the Ramapo (32-12)-
Neumann (25-9) game at 2 p.m. on Friday. A loss in its first
game would send Haverford
up against King's (Pa.) (36-7), Moravian (33-7) or Methodist
(N.C.) (38-6) at 10 a.m. on Friday in the double-elimination
tourney.

SALISBURY, Md. -- Haverford sophomores
Erica Davies and Lindsey Sullivan both walked and scored as part
of one-out, bases-loaded rally in the fourth inning, but the Fords
(26-16) could not overcome a five-run third by the defending Division
III national runner-up Seagulls (33-6) in the NCAA tournament
debut.
Davies and Sullivan scored following
an infield error, hit-by-pitch and and fielder's choice. Frosh
starter Becky Garibotto (13-4) took the loss, but got credit for
the run batted in on Sullivan's score. Senior Sarah Nagle reached
base twice on bunt singles in the fifth and seventh innings, but
the Fords could not get another runner past second base off complete-game
winner Lacey Lister (18-3).
Sophomores Whitney Schrader and Kurisha
Hoffman belted back-to-back home runs, the former a grand slam,
to generate the five runs (four earned) off Garibotto in the third.
Frosh Sam Fontinell and soph Julia Iodice combined for 3-2/3 innings
of scoreless relief after the Gulls' outburst.
Haverford will face 24th-ranked, fourth-seeded
Moravian (33-8) in a second-round elimination game at 10 a.m.
Friday.
HAVERFORD -- Facing a 1-0 deficit heading
into the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday afternoon, it looked
as if Haverford might face a do-or-die Game Two against Centennial
Conference Pitcher of the Year Mallory Greene.
Instead, the Fords -- making their
first postseason appearance after 11 losing seasons -- broke through
against Bears sophomore lefthander Lindsay Schmidt for the second
straight day, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth, then holding
on for a thrilling, 2-1 victory at Class of '95 Field.
After a stellar catch in the left-centerfield
gap by Haverford's Sarah Nagle stranded Ursinus's Jenni Moore
in the first inning, the defending champion Bears (30-8) used
small ball to finally get their run in the top of the third. Leadoff
hitter Jessica Cherry reached base on an error, moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a Marci Logan single while
eluding a sweeping tag attempt by Fords catcher Adriane Theis.
Schmidt (13-2), who was undefeated
this season until Saturday's 8-0 loss to the Fords, cruised through
the first five innings Sunday, allowing two hits, including a
bunt single, and one walk. The Fords took charge in the bottom
of the sixth, when frosh leftfielder Dana Irshay, who had thrown
out Moore at the plate one inning earlier, started a rally with
her second bunt single of the game. With one out, soph Lindsey
Sullivan, batting cleanup, smacked a ground-rule double over the
right field fence for her ninth hit in 10 tournament at-bats.
With runners on second and third, one
out, and a one-run lead, the Bears opted to pitch to power-hitting
frosh Natalie Richman, who had produced a three-run homer among
her four RBIs in Saturday's games. Richman made the Bears pay
again with a two-run single through the box, sending a throng
of 150 into hysteria as the Fords were now only three outs away
from their first conference title.
Frosh starter Becky Garibotto (11-3),
who had pitched splendidly through the first six frames, struck
out the first two Ursinus batters in the seventh, then got a grounder
to second to seal the win. Garibotto allowed just one earned run
in her two starts -- a late solo home run Saturday in a 6-1 win
over McDaniel -- and matched Greene, who defeated Swarthmore (23-17)
twice, with two victories on the weekend.
Haverford (26-15, 14-2 Centennial excluding
playoffs) has improved 15 games overall and eight-plus in conference
play over its previous high win totals in school history (11-26,
6-10) achieved during head coach Jen Ward '04's first season in
2005. The Fords receive an automatic berth into next weekend's
NCAA Division III regionals by virtue of their league title, and
they will wait to hear tonight or tomorrow their seed and site
of competition heading into Mothers' Day weekend.
Sunday Schedule
Swarthmore vs. Ursinus, 10 a.m.
Swarthmore-Ursinus winner vs. Haverford
Swarthmore-Ursinus winner vs. Haverford (if necessary)
HAVERFORD -- Sophomore thirdbaseman
Lindsey Sullivan went 7-for-7 on the day, including 4-for-4 with
three runs versus defending champion Ursinus (29-7), as host Haverford
(25-15) moved closer to its first Centennial Conference softball
title.
Sarah Nagle and Natalie Richman each
added a pair of hits in the six-inning, combined four-hitter by
frosh Sam Fontinell and senior Centennial Player of the Year Nora
Spriggs. Fontinell laced a two-run single in the sixth to provide
the winning margin, following back-to-back doubles by Sullivan
and Richman.
Against McDaniel (20-19), Richman clubbed
a three-run homer to cap a five-run, two-out rally in the third
inning. Sullivan had doubled home Nagle with an initial unearned
run with two outs in the first. Starter Becky Garibotto allowed
four hits, including a solo home run in the fifth, before reliever
Julia Iodice slammed the door with a scoreless seventh.
ALLENTOWN -- Singles by Allison Frank,
Nora Spriggs (2-for-3) and Lindsey Sullivan (3-for-3) started
a six-run, seventh-inning rally in the opener for Haverford, which
clinched the top seed and the right to host next weekend's Centennial
Conference playoffs with its double-shutout Saturday.
Haverford had been in contention for
hosting the league's double-elimination tourney with Ursinus (28-6,
13-3), which swept Dickinson Saturday.
After Gray Vargas walked, Dana Irshay
and Erica Davies hit back-to-back two-run doubles and Natalie
Richman had an RBI single to score Frank, Spriggs' pinchrunner
Nancy Anderson, Sullivan, Vargas and Irshay. Spriggs (two hits,
one strikeout) slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh for
the win in relief of starter Sam Fontinell, who allowed just one
hit with two strikeouts in the first five innings.
In the nightcap, Erica Davies scored
three runs on RBI singles by Frank, Spriggs and Richman in the
first, third and fifth innings, respectively. Davies (2-for-4)
joined Richman (3-for-4, double) and Irshay (2-for-4) with multiple
hits, and Sullivan added another hit for the Fords (23-15, 14-2).
Becky Garibotto struck out four Mules (16-20, 8-8) with four hits
allowed in her complete-game shutout to end the regular season.
ST. DAVIDS -- Dana Irshay and Erica
Davies (2 RBI) had two hits each, and starting pitcher Becky Garibotto
(four strikeouts) shut down the host Eagles after a three-run
first inning, as Haverford won the opener of its non-conference
twinbill Thursday at Eastern.
Garibotto, Sarah Nagle and Nora Spriggs
each had a hit and an run, while Amy Havassy (two hits, RBI) and
Natalie Richman (two walks, run) also figured into the offense
in Game One.
Irshay had three hits and drove in
two runs, and Davies had a run and two hits, including a triple,
in the nightcap. The Fords (21-15), who had bases-loaded in the
seventh when the game ended on a long flyout, got one hit apiece
from Havassy, Richman and Nancy Anderson.
Haverford frosh Emily Orlansky struck
out two Eastern (11-19) batters and allowed just two hits in four
innings of her second career start, but one of the hits was a
two-run homer. Her classmates Katherine Clark (one hit, one run,
one strikeout) and Sam Fontinell (two hits, one run, two strikeouts)
each worked one inning in relief.
SWARTHMORE -- Erica Davies tripled
home complete-game winner Becky Garibotto and Dana Irshay with
what proved to be the decisive runs in the nightcap, as host Haverford
(20-14, 12-2) completed a Centennial Conference sweep of traditional
rival Swarthmore Tuesday.
Davies scored on an error, and Natalie
Richman and Allison Frank later singled, as all nine Fords batted
in the third inning. Sarah Nagle had singled, stolen second, and
scored on a Lindsey Sullivan hit in the bottom of the first.
The Garnet (19-14, 6-6) got singles
from Marianne Klingaman and Christine Sendelsky and a run on a
Haverford error in the top of the fourth. Danielle Miller, Katie
Gold and Melissa LaVan each had a single over the final three
innings, but Garibotto got the final nine outs without allowing
a run.
In the opener, Irshay reached on a
third-inning fielder's choice following a Garibotto single, stole
second, then scored following a Nagle single. Davies scored the
game-winner in the fourth on a single, passed ball, then RBI single
from Amy Havassy.
Sendelsky scored on a Kelly Siano single
in the sixth for Swarthmore, which also threatened with runners
on first and third in the seventh before Fords reliever Julia
Iodice got two groundouts and a flyout to earn a save. Haverford
starter Nora Spriggs (three strikeouts) had outdueled Swat's Alexandra
Zelaski for six innings to get the win.
HAVERFORD -- Becky Garibotto (six innings)
and Julia Iodice (one inning) combined for a seven-hit, two-walk
shutout, and Garibotto and Natalie Richman (two runs) delivered
two hits each, as Haverford completed its first-ever sweep of
Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg (21-10, 5-5) Thursday.
Garibotto got the Fords (18-14, 10-2)
off and running with a leadoff single in the first inning. She
was brought home by a Lindsey Sullivan two-run double, and Sarah
Nagle, who had reached on a bunt single, was driven home by Nora
Spriggs.
Haverford added a run in the second
on back-to-back doubles by Richman and Adriane Theis, then two
more in the fourth on singles by Erica Davies, Richman, Garibotto
and Dana Irshay.
The Fords also jumped out to a 2-0
lead in the first inning of the opener, on an Irshay walk, Nagle
single and two-run Sullivan double. Irshay and Sullivan scored
in the third inning on a two-run double by winning pitcher Spriggs.
Spriggs allowed just five hits, no walks and no earned runs, while
striking out four Bullets.
COLLEGEVILLE -- Nora Spriggs, Natalie
Richman (double) and Sarah Nagle opened the fourth inning with
consecutive hits, leading to a three-run inning and a 4-3 lead
in the nightcap, but host Ursinus (21-5, 8-2) got one run in the
fourth and two in the sixth to pull even with Haverford (16-14,
8-2) for the lead in the Centennial Conference.
Spriggs had singled in Allison Frank
after Frank's leadoff double in the second inning. Starting pitcher
Becky Garibotto (RBI) -- who struck out six and allowed just one
earned run on nine hits and a walk -- and catcher Adriane Theis
had the other hits for the Fords.
Sam Fontinell (two hits, one walk)
and Julia Iodice (four hits, one walk) each allowed one earned
run, and Spriggs added an inning of hitless, scoreless relief
in the opener.
Dana Irshay, Spriggs and Richman all
had one-out singles in different innings, but the only Irshay
advanced to second as the Fords were three-hit by Mallory Greene
(eight strikeouts) in Game One.
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Haverford, which
had never previously beaten McDaniel in softball, swept the Green
Terror Saturday to remain alone in first place in the Centennial
Conference pennant race.
In the first game, the Fords (16-12,
8-0) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning as frosh
Natalie Richman hit her first career home run to plate Lindsey
Sullivan, who had singled to lead off the inning. After the Terror
(14-16, 2-6) tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Haverford reclaimed its lead in the seventh on Nora Spriggs’
double to right, and a single off the bat of Richman. Both runners
would score on a combination of wild pitches and passed balls
later in the inning. The Green Terror could not respond in its
final at bats against Julia Iodice, who earned her third save
of the season. Samantha Fontinell (5-1) pitched sixth innings
for the Fords while allowing five hits.
In the second game, both teams starting
pitchers went the distance, without allowing an earned run. The
Fords' Becky Garibotto (5-2) allowed five hits while striking
out four for the win. The Terror’s Nichol Moeller (4-7)
struck out six while walking three and giving up four hits.
The lone run of the game came in the
sixth inning as Spriggs doubled to right center scoring Allison
Frank, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.
4/11/06 Haverford 3, Franklin &
Marshall 1 (1st)
Haverford 9, Franklin & Marshall 8 (2nd)
HAVERFORD -- Down by 3-2 in the fifth
inning of the nightcap, and by 8-6 going into their last at-bat,
the host Fords (14-12, 6-0) rallied with four runs in the fifth,
and three in the seventh, to remain undefeated atop the Centennial
Conference standings Tuesday.
Sarah Nagle, Dana Irshay, Natalie Richman
and Allison Frank delivered hits in the fifth, and Lindsey Sullivan
and Frank had singles in the game-winning rally in the seventh.
After Sullivan scored with one out, both Richman and Erica Davies
came home on a bases-loaded fielder's choice and infield miscue
off the bat of Amy Havassy to clinch the sweep.
Nora Spriggs (4-6) got the win by getting
a ground out from the last F&M batter, right after the Diplomats
(4-23, 1-7) had scored five runs in their half of the seventh
off starter Becky Garibotto and reliever Julia Iodice.
Nagle had two of the Fords' three hits
in the opener, but Sam Fontinell (4-1) scattered six hits and
struck out six Dips en route to her complete-game win.

The College of New Jersey 4, Haverford 3 (2nd)
EWING, N.J. -- Sarah Nagle and Dana
Irshay gave Haverford a 2-0 lead by scoring the first two runs
ever at TCNJ's new softball complex, but the Lions rallied to
tie, then win the opener on a leadoff triple and squeeze play
in their last at-bat.
Irshay reached base on all four of
her plate appearances with two singles and two walks. Erica Davies
(double), Lindsey Sullivan (RBI), Nora Spriggs, Natalie Richman
and Becky Garibotto (pinch-hit single) also had hits for the Fords.
Starter Sam Fontinell worked four innings, before she was spelled
by Julia Iodice and Spriggs.
In the nightcap, Garibotto helped herself
with a single before turning the pitching duties over to Iodice
and Spriggs. Sullivan was 2-for-3 and hit a solo shot to tie Carrie
Clausen (1995-98) for the most career home runs at Haverford with
four. Nagle, Davies and Amy Havassy (RBI) had hits before Spriggs
led off the seventh with a double, but was stranded at third.
The Lions (17-7) scored the winning
run in the bottom half of the seventh on a double and RBI single
to right field.
Despite Thursday's sweep which returned
them to .500 on the season, head coach Jen Ward's Fords (12-12)
are enjoying their best year ever, having already surpassed their
previous record win totals (11) set in 2003 and 2005.

Haverford 7, Washington (Md.) 0 (2nd)
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Seniors Sarah Nagle
(double, two runs) and Nora Spriggs (double, three runs batted
in) delivered three hits each, and the Fords scored three runs
in both the fifth and sixth innings of the opener, to rally from
a 6-4 deficit and break a first-place Centennial Conference tie
with the host Shorewomen Tuesday.
Dana Irshay (two runs), Erica Davies
(three runs) and Natalie Richman (double) each had two hits, and
Lindsey Sullivan had an RBI double in Game One, which was won
by Julia Iodice (two strikeouts) with two innings relief of starter
Sam Fontinell (four innings).
Closer Spriggs allowed two runs but
sealed the win in the final inning.
Three consecutive Fords (12-10, 4-0)
reached base on error en route to five unearned runs in the first
inning of the nightcap. Winning pitcher Becky Garibotto smacked
a run-scoring double to cap the early rally, then faced just two
Washington (11-11, 2-2) batters over the minimum of 21 with her
seven-inning, two-hit complete game. Sullivan scored on a Spriggs
sacrifice fly after her leadoff triple in the third, and Richman
led off the sixth with a single and scored on a two-out single
by Irshay.
HAVERFORD -- Samantha Fontinell scattered
four hits before Nora Spriggs earned a one-inning save, and Becky
Garibotto allowed five hits and no runs in the nightcap, as both
Haverford first-year hurlers earned victories in their Centennial
Conference debuts Saturday.
Erica Davies was 2-for-3 with an RBI,
and Sarah Nagle, Lindsey Sullivan (RBI), Allison Frank (run) and
Spriggs (RBI double) each had one hit for Fontinell (run).
Sullivan was 3-for-4 with two runs
and five runs batted in, including her bases-loaded double that
ended the game with the Red Devils (9-13, 0-2) by rule with two
outs in the bottom of the sixth. Nagle, Irshay, Davies, Spriggs,
Garibotto and Natalie Richman each had two hits in the 15-hit
nightcap attack by the Fords (10-10, 2-0).
GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Senior Nora Spriggs
singled home Erica Davies with Haverford's only hit of the opener,
and delivered a bases-loaded triple to put Haverford up, 3-2,
in the fifth inning of Game Two, but host Rowan scored one run
each in the sixth and seventh innings to avoid their first loss
of the season Thursday.
Rowan exacted revenge for its deficit
by getting the tying and winning runs off Spriggs, who had entered
the game in relief of starter Sam Fontinell after the Fords (8-10)
took the lead. Thursday was the first time that the Profs (20-0),
ranked second in this week's Division III coaches' poll, had trailed
after five innings this season.
Sarah Nagle went 2-for-3 in the nightcap
and scored along with Dana Irshay and Allison Frank on Spriggs'
double; both Irshay and Frank reached base on a walk and errors
in the game. Davies and Adriane Theis had Haverford's other hits,
and Nancy Anderson was hit by a pitch.
Becky Garibotto took the loss in Game
One, with one inning's relief by Julia Iodice. Davis (hit by pitch)
and Frank both walked in the opener and were the only Fords to
reach base besides Spriggs.
HAVERFORD -- Nora Spriggs scattered
three hits and picked up three strikeouts in four innings, before
Emily Orlansky slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning and one strikeout
to close out Tuesday's Game One.
Erica Davies was 3-for-3 with her first
collegiate home run, a double, two runs and two runs batted in.
Allison Frank and Dana Irshay each had two hits and two runs scored,
while Sam Fontinell (run, RBI), Lindsey Sullivan (double, RBI),
Gray Vargas (run, RBI), Becky Garibotto (run) and Amy Havassy
(run) all had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, Garibotto threw a
five-inning two-hitter with four strikeouts versus the Ramblers
(1-12). Davies and Irshay each had a hit, run and RBI, while Frank
(run) and Spriggs also had hits, including the latter's double
which started a seven-run fourth inning. Garibotto, Natalie Richman
and Nancy Anderson scored the other runs for the Fords (8-8).
CHESTER -- Dana Irshay (RBI), Lindsey
Sullivan (run) and Amy Havassy provided hits, and Sam Fontinell
scored herself while allowing just five hits as Haverford's opening
pitcher, but the Fords were edged in both halves of Wednesday
twinbill.
Allison Frank drove in the other run
for the Fords, who scored one run in each of their last two at-bats
after spotting Widener a 3-0 lead.
The nightcap went to extra innings
at 2-2 after seven, and the teams scored in each extra frame,
with the Pioneers scoring twice in the ninth. Sarah Nagle and
Sullivan (two doubles, run) each had three hits, and Becky Garibotto
pitched six innings and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Natalie Richman
and Adriane Theis each had a hit, and Nora Spriggs, relief pitcher
Julia Iodice and Irshay all scored runs.
HAVERFORD -- Dana Irshay (triple),
Erica Davies (double), Lindsey Sullivan (home run) and Amy Havassy
(double) each had two hits and two runs in the opener as host
Haverford snapped Neumann's 10-game, season-opening win streak
Tuesday.
Gray Vargas (double) and Allison Frank
(homer) added extra-base hits, and Irshay and Sullivan each drove
in three runs, to get the first collegiate win for frosh Becky
Garibotto, who scattered nine hits in seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Fords (6-6) responded
to five Neumann (10-2) runs in the top of the second with 10 runs
in the home half of the inning. Seniors Sarah Nagle and Nora Spriggs
drove in three runs apiece in the 10-run outburst with triple
and home run, respectively. Winning pitcher Spriggs and senior
catcher Adriane Theis (three runs) each singled and scored as
the Fords added three insurance runs in their final at-bat.
HAVERFORD -- Senior Sarah Nagle led
off with a triple, frosh Dana Irshay walked, and sophomore Erica
Davies (run) and frosh Becky Garibotto provided RBI singles, as
