#1 Messiah 1, Haverford 0

GRANTHAM -- Haverford played even with Division III's top-ranked team over the final 84:59 and had several chances to tie the game in the final minutes, but a goal on the Falcons' first shot 5:01 into the game by Hannah Levesque on a Stef Rowe cross proved the difference in Saturday's NCAA playoff.

First-year goalkeeper Lindsay Festa was credited with nine saves and made several diving stops in rapid succession to keep the Fords (14-5-2) in contention with the Falcons (19-0), who advanced to next weekend's Round of 16.

Fords advance with 3-2 win in penalty kick shootout

Second Round
Haverford at Messiah, Sat. 11/12

HAVERFORD -- Senior Ashley Emmons drilled the final penalty kick of a best-of-five shootout into the top left corner of the net, allowing host Haverford to advance to the second round of the Division III tournament Wednesday.

Despite a 30-9 advantage in shots during a 1-1, double-overtime tie, the Fords (14-4-2) never led in the contest until sophomore Ryan Hedrick and senior Meej Kim nailed their team's second and third shots in the shootout. Both teams had scored following second-half corner kicks, with Arcadia soph Patty Robb getting the first goal at 63:18, and Haverford frosh Lauren Kibbe answering 2:49 later.

In the tie-breaking session, senior Maria DeGeorge gave Arcadia (13-6-2) an early lead, but frosh Samantha Calhoun's went wide right and junior Rachel Beauchesne hit the left post. Soph Kat Kraemer made the Knights' fourth PK attempt, but Fords rookie keeper Lindsay Festa stonewalled frosh Amanda Pote with a kick-save on Arcadia's final attempt to set up Emmons' decisive blast.

Festa made three saves in the first half and returned in the second overtime following 55 minutes of relief from junior Andrea Fishman. Fishman made one save in her stint in goal, which was followed almost immediately by a brilliant team save on an open net by first-year defender Lizzie Masland. From that point, the Fords held the Knights without a shot over the final 32:17. Arcadia sophomore keeper Michelle Leone made 11 saves in 110 minutes and stopped Haverford senior Elena Kozakewich and Masland in the shootout.

The playoff game was the Fords' debut in the D-III women's soccer tourney, and was the first NCAA home game for Haverford in any sport since a first-round women's lacrosse match on the same Walton Field in 1986.

Haverford will next visit top-seeded Messiah College (18-0-0) in the tournament's second round, Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grantham, Pa.

11/5/05 Johns Hopkins 3, Haverford 0

CARLISLE -- First-year goalkeeper Lindsay Festa made seven saves in goal, but the Fords' season ended Saturday with a record of 14-4-1.

Johns Hopkins (14-3-1) will meet top-seed and tournament host Dickinson (14-1-3) in Sunday's CC final at 1 p.m. The Red Devils downed fourth-seed Ursinus, 1-0, in the other semifinal.

10/29/05 Haverford 2, Swarthmore 0

HAVERFORD -- Scoring two second-half goals in her final regular season game on Walton Field, Haverford senior forward Ashley Emmons headed in a bouncing corner kick, then drove home an insurance goal on a feed from classmate Lindsey Dolich with 5:43 left in Saturday's Centennial Conference and Hood Trophy contest.

Emmons moved into fourth place in career goals (31) and points (81) at Haverford with her scores, moving past Amanda Salter's totals of 29-20-78 from 1994-97.
Fords (14-3-1, 7-2-1) frosh keeper Lindsay Festa made three saves for her fifth shutout in seven career starts, while goalie Lauren Walker of the Garnet (3-11-3, 1-7-2) made 10 saves and kept the hosts at bay until the 63rd minute while facing a 34-8 deficit in shots.

Helped by Dickinson's 1-0, overtime win Saturday over Gettysburg, third-seeded Haverford will next face second-seeded Johns Hopkins in next Saturday's Centennial semifinals at Dickinson.

10/26/05 Haverford 2, Ursinus 0

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Emily Hurwitz scored on a corner kick from Annie Turner, and Elena Kozakewich scored another first-half goal to give Haverford a 2-0 halftime lead.

10/22/05 Gettysburg 2, Haverford 1 (OT)

GETTYSBURG -- The Fords' Hana Rosen headed in a corner kick by Cathy Carbonaro to tie the score at 1-all early in the second half, but Haverford's quest for its first win in Gettysburg since 1997 was undone by a Katie Myers goal 3:28 into the first 10-minute overtime.

For Gettysburg (8-6-2, 6-2-1), Steph Smith provided the assist on Myers' game-winner, while Katie Ferraro tapped in a feed off a corner by Kristin Igusky for the game's first goal in the 26th minute.

In between those goals, Lauren Kibbe banged home a cross by Caryn Dolich in midair to complete the scoring by the Fords (11-2, 5-1), who outshot their guests by a 24-2 margin in the first half and 41-8 overall.
