HAVERFORD -- Senior Ashley Emmons drilled
the final penalty kick of a best-of-five shootout into the top
left corner of the net, allowing host Haverford to advance to
the second round of the Division III tournament Wednesday.
Despite a 30-9 advantage in shots during
a 1-1, double-overtime tie, the Fords (14-4-2) never led in the
contest until sophomore Ryan Hedrick and senior Meej Kim nailed
their team's second and third shots in the shootout. Both teams
had scored following second-half corner kicks, with Arcadia soph
Patty Robb getting the first goal at 63:18, and Haverford frosh
Lauren Kibbe answering 2:49 later.
In the tie-breaking session, senior
Maria DeGeorge gave Arcadia (13-6-2) an early lead, but frosh
Samantha Calhoun's went wide right and junior Rachel Beauchesne
hit the left post. Soph Kat Kraemer made the Knights' fourth PK
attempt, but Fords rookie keeper Lindsay Festa stonewalled frosh
Amanda Pote with a kick-save on Arcadia's final attempt to set
up Emmons' decisive blast.
Festa made three saves in the first
half and returned in the second overtime following 55 minutes
of relief from junior Andrea Fishman. Fishman made one save in
her stint in goal, which was followed almost immediately by a
brilliant team save on an open net by first-year defender Lizzie
Masland. From that point, the Fords held the Knights without a
shot over the final 32:17. Arcadia sophomore keeper Michelle Leone
made 11 saves in 110 minutes and stopped Haverford senior Elena
Kozakewich and Masland in the shootout.

in the D-III women's soccer tourney, and was the first NCAA home
game for Haverford in any sport since a first-round women's lacrosse
