HAVERFORD, PA - Four different Haverford players
scored one goal a piece, as the Fords defeated Centennial Conference
opponent Washington College, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at a soggy
Walton Field.
The Fords broke open the scoring in the 12th
minute when junior forward Sarah Morris recorded a goal off an
assist from freshman forward Monica Stegman. Sophomore forward
Annie Turner added another goal less than two minutes later with
a shot from 25 yards out which glided over the Washington goalkeeper
and into the back of the net. Freshman midfielder Therese Verkerke
notched the Fords third goal of the half off a pass from Stegman,
who recorded her first two career assists in the game. Freshman
midfielder Katie Johnston-Davis scored her first goal of her collegiate
career in the 89th minute after shooting the ball into the net
off a save from the boot of Turner.
Haverford sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Festa made one save to
earn the win, while Washington goalie Caroline Grier made nine
saves in the losing effort.
The Fords out shot the Shorewomen by a 23-6 margin, and held a
4-0 edge in corner kicks.
With the win, the Fords improved to 5-6-1 overall and 4-2 in Centennial
play, while the Shorewomen fall to 3-8-1 and 0-6.
Haverford will return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game
at Centennial foe Dickinson.
