Women's Soccer Ties #12 Lynchburg
Wins Kick-Off Tournament 4-2 on Penalty Kicks
HAVERFORD, PA - The Haverford College women's
soccer team tied Lynchburg College, 0-0, but were crowned the
2006 Haverford College Kick-Off Tournament Champions after outscoring
Lynchburg, 4-2, in a shootout. Lindsay Festa made eight saves,
in the game, and made a key save in the shootout period to lead
the Fords to their second straight Tournament Championship.
Despite being out shot by a margin of 20-4, the
Fords managed to keep Lynchburg off the score sheet. Festa played
a very strong game in goal for Haverford, including a excellent
second overtime where she made three saves on a pressuring Lynchburg
squad. Lynchburg also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and
shots on goal.
In order to crown a Kick-Off Tournament champion,
the game was decided in a shootout period. Hana Rosen connected
on the first shootout attempt of the period, and the Fords never
looked back. Allison O'Donnell connected on a goal past the diving
Lynchburg goalkeeper, into the bottom right hand corner of the
net after Lynchburg's Siobhan Budine missed wide right. Ryan Hedrick
then followed with a shootout goal of her own. Festa followed
with a key save off the foot of Lynchburg player Catherine Adams
before Annie Turner put her attempt deep into the top left hand
corner of the net, securing the Tournament title for the Fords.
Haverford returns to action on Saturday when they
take on non-conference opponent Smith on the campus of Stevens
Tech at 4 p.m.
