#16 Johns Hopkins Blanks Haverford, 3-0
HAVERFORD, PA - Haverford College (1-3-1,
0-1) dropped its 2006 Centennial Conference opener to 16th ranked
Johns Hopkins (4-1, 1-0), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Walton
Field.
The game remained scoreless until the 30th
minute when Blue Jays midfielder Lisa Irrizary and Fords goalkeeper
Lindsay Festa both went for a loose ball at the top of the Haverford
box. The ball made contact with both players, however, the ball
went towards the Haverford net. Irrizary ran around Festa and
kicked the ball into a wide open Haverford net, giving the Hopkins
a 1-0 advantage. Hopkins midfielder Molly Steele recorded a goal
on a header, off a corner kick from teammate Jessie McKenzie to
give Hopkins a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute. Midfielder Kaitlin
Giannetti put the game out of the Fords reach in the 76th minute,
registering the Blue Jays third goal.
Hopkins held the advantage in shots (25-9)
and in corner kicks (15-0) in the contest. Festa made 11 saves
in the loss for Haverford, while Hopkins goalkeeper Kerry Hamilton
made eight saves for the win.
The Fords will return to action Wednesday
at 4:00 p.m. when they will play at non-conference opponent Eastern.
