HAVERFORD, PA - Junior forward Ryan Hedrick
scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 44th
minute off a pass from junior defender Katie Garrett as Haverford
College defeated visiting Centennial Conference opponent Franklin
& Marshall, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.
The Fords came out of the gates putting tremendous
pressure on the Diplomats defense. Haverford opened the scoring
when sophomore forward Annie Turner took a corner kick which found
Garrett on the far right side of the box. After gaining full control
of the ball, Garrett dribbled around a F&M defender and found
a wide open Hedrick in front of the net. Hedrick fired the ball
into the top left corner of the goal to give the Fords a 1-0 edge
going into halftime.
The scoring continued in the 73rd minute as freshman forward Molly
Graepel drove the ball past the Diplomats defense en route to
a two-on-one breakaway. Graepel's last dribble towards the net
was a touch too hard, however, Graepel beat F&M goalkeeper
Robyn Jones to the ball and got off a weak shot which went off
the right post. Haverford sophomore defender Southey Saul was
right there to put the rebound into the back of the net, giving
the Fords the insurance goal and securing the 2-0 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Festa made five saves for Haverford
(2-4-1 overall, 1-1 Centennial), including a point blank save
in the 78th minute off a header by F&M (5-2-1, 1-1) forward
Kelsey Tylus.
Haverford will play host to Centennial
opponent Bryn Mawr on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
