HAVERFORD, PA – Haverford College lost to visiting Wabash,
4-1, in the first game of the 2006 Jimmy Mills Tournament Saturday
afternoon at Walton Field. Sophomore midfielder Eric Kissinger
scored the Fords only goal, his second of the season, in the losing
effort.
After a scoreless first half of play, Wabash Bolivian midfielder
Luis Quiroga scored the first goal of the game on a header off
a cross pass from junior midfielder Chris Serak to give the Little
Giants a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. Wabash junior midfielder
Gary Simkus followed with what would prove to be the game-winning
goal in the 56th minute after he dribbled the ball into the box,
shooting low past diving Haverford goalkeeper
Adam Care to make the score 2-0. Haverford sophomore Eric Kissinger
cut the Wabash lead to 2-1, scoring on a diving header in front
of the net off a perfectly placed cross pass from senior forward
Marcus Sur in the 61st minute. The Little Giants responded with
two goals, both by Simkus in the 63rd and 78th minutes.
Care made five saves in net for Haverford, while Wabash goalkeeper
Matthew McClain made nine saves in the victory.
The Fords held a 24-20 advantage in shots, and a 10-7 edge in
corners in the contest.
Haverford will play the loser of the Cabrini/Immaculata game on
Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Walton Field.
