Shorter (Ga.) Defeats Haverford, 2-0
ROME, GA - Haverford College got off three shots on goal over
the final three minutes of regulation, but it was not enough as
the Fords dropped the first game of its two game fall break trip
to Georgia, 2-0, to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA) opponent Shorter College Saturday evening.
After a scoreless first half, Shorter broke open the scoring in
the 49th minute when senior defender Wayne Bailey connected on
an unassisted goal. Hawks sophomore forward Robert Whitnell added
an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Whitnell's tally was assisted
by Angel Damian.
Haverford sophomore goalkeepers Jim Wiltsee and Adam Care split
time in net for the Fords. Wiltsee made four saves in the first
half, while Care made two saves in the second period. Shorter
starting goalkeeper Tom Fulton made one save in the first 87 minutes
of play, before being replaced by Steve Smith. Smith made three
saves in the final three minutes of play to secure the shut out
for the Hawks.
Shorter out shot the Fords by a 25-5 margin, and held a 7-3 advantage
in corner kicks.
The Fords will return to action in the state of Georgia when they
will face Oglethorpe on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
