HAVERFORD, PA - Visiting Dickinson College scored two goals
in the opening 6:33 of play en route to a 2-0 victory Saturday
afternoon over host Haverford College in Centennial Conference
men's soccer action. With the win, Dickinson improves to 9-6 overall
and 3-4 in Centennial play. With the loss, Haverford drops to
2-12-1 and 1-5-1.
Dickinson midfielder Matthew Wood beat a Haverford defender in
the box and shot the ball into the bottom right hand corner of
the net, past diving Haverford goalkeeper Jim Wiltsee, to give
the Red Devils a 1-0 advantage in the fifth minute. 2:23 later,
Dickinson midfielder Paolo Boero gained possession of the ball
off a corner kick. After dribbling the ball around in the box,
Boero took a shot which glanced off the back of a Haverford defender,
sailing over Wiltsee's head and into the net. Haverford sophomore
goalie Adam Care, who entered the game in the second half for
the Fords, made a crowd pleasing save stopping a penalty shot
midway through the second half to keep the game at 2-0. However,
Dickinson's defense and steady ball possession abled the Red Devils
to hold on to the 2-0 lead throughout the rest of the contest.
Dickinson out shot Haverford by a 16-7 margin. All of the Fords
shots came in the second half. Haverford goalies Wiltsee and sophomore
Adam Care combined to make eight saves in the loss.
Prior to this afternoon's game, the Fords recognized seniors Josef
Bartels, Nick Dibble, Brian Doherty, Matt Eppright, Steve Selsor
and Marcus Sur for their contributions to the Haverford men's
soccer program. Today's game was the Fords last home game of the
2006 season.
With the loss, the Fords have been officially eliminated from
reaching the 2006 Centennial Conference postseason tournament.
