#7 Lynchburg Handles Haverford, 14-9;
Distler and Tcheyan Score Three Goals Each in Season Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA - Host Lynchburg, ranked 7th in Division III, outscored
Haverford 5-0 in the third quarter en route to a 14-9 win Saturday
afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. Junior attack
Mike Distler and senior attack Max Tcheyan scored three goals
each in Haverford's season opener. Freshman goalie John-Paul Cashiola
made ten saves in his collegiate debut for Haverford.
Lynchburg scored the game's first three goals over the opening
4:28 of play, two of which were netted by Tyler Tolson. Tcheyan
got the Fords on the board with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter,
but the Hornets came back with three more goals to take a 6-1
advantage with 1:36 remaining in the opening quarter. The Fords
answered with with two goals over a seven second span. Senior
defender Steve Selsor and Distler registered their first goals
of the season in the seven second span to end make the game 6-3
at the end of the first quarter.
The Fords momentum carried into the second quarter, as Haverford
outscored Lynchburg 3-1 in the period off two goals by Distler
and freshman attack Alex Guy's first collegiate goal, making the
score 7-6 in Lynchburg's favor at the half.
The Hornets kept the Fords off the scoreboard in the third period,
taking a 12-6 advantage into the final quarter. The Fords took
the fourth quarter from the Hornets, 3-2, but ended up losing
the contest by a 14-9 count. Tcheyan score two fourth quarter
goals and the third was added by junior defender Joel Cesner.
Distler, Selsor, juniors Shane Hafer and Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald
and freshman attack Brian Fleishhacker each had one assist apiece
in the losing effort. Distler ended the day with a team-high four
points. Junior midfielder Dean Granoff collected a game-high seven
ground balls while Selsor and freshman midfielder Grant Firestone
each had six ground balls for the Fords.
Tolson led Lynchburg with a game-high five goals in the win.
The Fords went 0-for-5 in extra man opportunities while the Hornets
went 2-of-6. Haverford won 17-of-27 faceoffs on the day, including
a 5-of-6 performance by Distler and a 8-of-12 effort by sophomore
Peter Hannapel.
The Hornets are 1-0 on the season with the win, while the Fords
start the 2007 campaign with a 0-1 overall record. Haverford will
travel to Messiah on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference
game.
