#6 Washington Slips Past #16 Fords, 9-8, in 4 OT
CHESTERTOWN, MD - Host Washington College, ranked sixth in Division
III, needed four overtimes to slip past 16th-ranked Haverford,
9-8 Saturday evening in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action.
The loss drops the Fords to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Centennial
play on the season, while Washington improves to 8-2 and 3-1.
Senior attack Max Tcheyan paced the Fords offense dishing out
a game-high three assists while adding a goal.
The Fords got on board first when junior midfielder Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald
scored off a pass from Tcheyan to give Haverford a 1-0 lead with
4:39 left in the first period. Haverford went up 2-0 57 seconds
later when junior midfielder Dean Granoff netted his first of
two goals in the game. Washington came back to tie the game at
two, scoring two goals in the final 24 seconds of the first quarter.
Tcheyan assisted on his second goal of the game, finding freshman
attack Alex Guy to give Haverford a 3-2 advantage early in the
second quarter. Guy then dished out an assist on freshman Brian
Fleishhacker's only goal of the game with 2:50 left in the first
half to give Haverford a 4-2 lead. Washington answered with a
goal of its own with two seconds left in the half to make the
score 4-3 at the intermission.
The Shoremen out scored the Fords 4-1 in the third quarter, with
Tcheyan netting the only Haverford goal of the period. Down 7-5,
Guy scored off a pass from Fleishhacker with 10:55 left in the
fourth quarter. Guy was hit after the goal, giving Haverford a
man up opportunity. The Fords cashed in on the extra man chance
as Tcheyan assisted on a goal by Fleishhacker, knotting the game
at seven. Washington was able to find the net to take an 8-7 lead,
but with 5:31 left in the fourth junior midfielder Shane Hafer
dished out an assist on Granoff's second goal of the game to send
the contest into overtime tied at eight a piece.
Haverford took control of the ball through the majority of the
first two overtimes, out shooting Washington by a 9-1 margin in
that span. However, the Fords were not able to get a shot off
over the last two overtime periods, as Washington held possession
throughout the third and fourth overtimes. Haverford won the opening
face-off in the fourth overtime, but the ball was knocked loose
twice and eventually picked up by Washington's Andrew Ostrusky.
With players scattered all over the field, Ostrusky passed the
ball down field to Jimmy Kielek who found Chris Read near the
crease as he fired the game-winner past Haverford senior goalie
K.C. Peterson.
Peterson finished the game with 12 saves, while Fleishhacker,
Guy and Granoff each had two goals a piece. Tcheyan had a goal
and registered a game-high three assists in the losing effort.
Shots and ground balls were practically even in the game, as the
Fords had 33 shots and 34 ground balls to the Shoremen's 31 shots
and 30 ground balls.
Haverford returns to action next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home
game against Centennial foe Dickinson.
