#14 Hampden-Sydney Rallies Past Fords, 9-8
ALEXANDRIA , VA - 14th-ranked Hampden-Sydney scored two goals
in the final 53 seconds on the game to rally past Haverford, 9-8
Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. Freshman
attack Brian Fleishhacker tied a game-high with three goals in
the losing effort for the Fords. The Tigers improve to 2-0 overall
on the season with the win while the Fords fall to 0-2.
Haverford jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first quarter
off goals by Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald, Fleishhacker and junior Mike
Distler. Senior Max Tcheyan and junior Dean Granoff registered
assists on the first quarter goals. The Fords then took a 4-1
lead with 7:53 left in the second quarter when Fleishhacker scored
off a pass from junior Matt Handel. The Tigers roared back and
closed out the half scoring four straight goals to take a 5-4
lead into the halftime break.
Hampden-Sydney extended its lead to 6-4 early in the third quarter,
but Haverford responded with a man up goal by sophomore attack
Jeremy Golan to make the score 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers Thomas Hovis scored a goal 59 seconds into the fourth
quarter to make the game 7-5. Haverford responded with three consecutive
goals by Tcheyan, Distler and Fleishhacker over a 4:31 span to
give the Fords a 8-7 advantage with 4:54 remaining. The Fords
controlled the ball on the offensive end for three minutes, but
the Tigers managed to get the ball back after a missed shot with
just over a minute to go in the game. Ryan Harrigan scored the
game-tying goal with 53 seconds left and Andrew Mahoney followed
with the game-winning goal 24 seconds later off a pass by Will
Shell to give the Tigers the come-from-behind win.
Freshman goalkeeper John-Paul Cashiola had 17 saves in the loss
for Haverford. The Fords won only 9-of-21 faceoffs. Sophomore
Peter Hannapel won 7-of-8 faceoffs on the day for Haverford. Junior
defender Joel Cesner collected a team-high four ground balls.
Haverford went 1-for-5 on man up opportunities while Hampden-Sydney
was 1-for-8 with the extra man.
Haverford will travel to non-conference opponent Wesley on Friday
for a 4:00 p.m contest.
