Haverford Holds Off Franklin & Marshall, 7-6
LANCASTER, PA - Visiting Haverford held off a fourth quarter Franklin
& Marshall rally to earn its second straight Centennial Conference
victory, 7-6, over the host Diplomats Saturday afternoon. Senior
attack Max Tcheyan and junior midfielders Shane Hafer and Matt
Thorne-Fitzgerald each scored two goals for Haverford, while senior
goalie K.C. Peterson made 16 saves in the victory. The Fords improve
their record to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in Centennial play, while
the Diplomats dip to 5-5 and 2-3.
The Diplomats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Down,
but the Fords responded with three straight goals of their own.
Thorne-Fitzgerald scored an unassisted goal 4:28 into the first
quarter, while Tcheyan netted Haverford's next two goals in a
3:02 span to pull Haverford ahead 3-1. Freshman midfielder Andrew
Kim assisted on Tcheyan's first goal, while junior midfielder
Dean Granoff assisted on Haverford's third goal of the game. The
Diplomats Cyrus Adams scored a goal, assisted by Down, to make
the score 3-2 at the end of one quarter on play.
The Fords tallied three unanswered second quarter goals to pull
ahead 7-2 at the half. Granoff scored off a pass from Kim 2:35
into the quarter, while Thorne-Fitzgerald found Hafer for his
first goal of the contest 49 seconds later. Tcheyan dished out
his first assist on Hafer's second goal of the game with 5:54
left in the half.
The Fords scored the only third quarter goal after Tcheyan assisted
on Thorne-Fitzgerald's second goal midway through the quarter.
The Diplomats scored four times in a 7:15 span of the fourth quarter,
but the Fords were able to hang on for the 7-6 win.
Tcheyan led Haverford with four points on two goals and two assists,
while Thorne-Fitzgerald had three points on two goals and an assist.
Both teams won 8-of-16 face offs and registered 24 ground balls
in the game. The Fords were 19-of-23 on clears while the Diplomats
successfully cleared the ball on 20-of-22 attempts. Haverford
was 0-for-3 on the extra man while F&M went 1-for-6 with the
man advantage.
Down led F&M with three points on a goal and two assists,
while Diplomats goalie Dan Coffman made ten saves in the losing
effort.
The Fords will travel to McDaniel next Saturday for a 3:00 p.m.
