Haverford Shuts Out Swarthmore, 2-0
HAVERFORD, PA - Freshman attack Ariel Herm
recorded her first collegiate goal, while junior attack Colleen
Farrell scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to lead
host Haverford College past Centennial Conference rival Swarthmore
College, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon in field hockey action. Farrell
has scored five goals over the Fords past six games. Farrell,
who has scored a goal in each of the Fords past three games, leads
the squad with eight goals and three assists for 19 points on
the season.
Haverford controlled play through much of the first half, holding
a 7-1 shot advantage while taking 10 penalty corners to six for
the Garnet. Herm tipped in the game-winning goal at 22:40, re-directing
a cross from sophomore defender Julia McGuire just inside the
right side of the cage. The assist from McGuire is her first on
the season.
Swarthmore (9-7 overall, 4-5 Centennial)
had an opportunity to knot the game at one as the game continued
into the second half. In the 57th minute, Swarthmore's Ashley
Gunter drew a penalty stroke for Swarthmore. Garnet senior Summer
Spicer lined up against Fords’ goalie Sarah Graves and flipped
the shot towards the top of the cage, but Graves denied the attempt
to keep the score at 1-0. Farrell then added the insurance goal
for the Fords at 68:44.
Haverford sophomore goalie Sarah Graves picked up her fourth win,
and second shut out of the season, making four saves in the victory.
Tuesday's victory snaps Haverford's six-game losing streak against
the Garnet. Haverford last defeated Swarthmore 2-1 on November
5, 2002, in the final game of the 2002 regular season..
The Fords (7-8, 3-6) will look to finish the regular season at
.500 when they host Centennial opponent Dickinson on Saturday
at 12:00 p.m. Senior day festivities will be held immediately
before the start of the game.
