Men’s Outlook
The 2008-09 Haverford College men’s fencing squad placed third at the New England Championships last year as Remy Olson and Max Rosen-Long claimed individual titles. With 2008 NCAA Championships participant Olson and a young team of top fencers, the Fords look to recapture their Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) crown in 2009-10, last won in 2007. In addition to their MACFA schedule, they will face a wide array of opponents, from Penn State to Boston College, gaining experience against the top NCAA Division I programs. Having sent seven fencers to the 2009 NCAA Regional Championship, the team looks to qualify more fencers to the NCAA nationals in 2009-10.
This year’s men’s team has a handful of strong fencers in each weapon. A large recruiting class of excellent fencers has rounded out the men’s roster considerably, making this one of the deepest teams Haverford has fielded in many years.
Women’s Outlook
The 2008-09 Haverford College women’s fencing team won its first Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championship, rising to the top of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region.
Led by co-captains Amanda Levinson (2009 First-Team NIWFA) and Emma Buckingham (2008 NCAA Finalist), the Fords will look to defend their EWFC title in the coming season as well as challenge for the top spot in the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association (NIWFA). Haverford has been consistently in the top four of the NIWFA for the last decade.
Levinson, Buckingham and a few others will also be in contention to go to the 2009-10 NCAA nationals.
