Haverford Women Soar to Best Finish Ever at NIWFA Championship
Amherst, MA - The Haverford women fencers finished
tied for third - its best finish ever - at the 79th NIWFA fencing
championships at Smith College in Amherst Mass. on Saturday, March
3. The tournament field was quite large and included 18 teams.
Sabre and Epee shared bragging rights for the best weapon result,
each placing third in their respective weapons.
Sabre finished behind perennial powerhouse Temple and Johns Hopkins.
All three fencers contributed with Junior Halli Melnitsky going
12-2 on A strip to lead the way. Junior Dana Litowitz was 9-5
on B strip and freshman Sarah Turkus had a career day going 10-4
on C strip. Haverford placed in front of a number of strong sabre
squads including Drew, Tufts, and Army.
Epee also placed third behind Stevens and Temple with three excellent
performances from the weapon that has most consistent all year.
Freshman Emma Buckingham was 10-6 on A strip, sophomore Vanessa
Pena finished 13-3 on B strip and sophomore Melanie Preston went
11-5 on C strip. One of the highlights of the day was a 3-0 victory
against Temple. Finishing after Haverford was Drew, FDU, and Hopkins.
Foil was lead by captain Heather Rozjabek who finished 10-6 on
the A strip. Hope Kaye and Monica Kishore fared well given their
level of experience with Kaye at 7-9 and Kishore going 4-12.
Haverford fencers also placed high in the individual tournament,
which featured the best fencers from the A, B and C strips. Halli
Melnitsky was third in Sabre, qualifying her for first team all-conference.
Senior captain Heather Rozjebek earned second team all-conference
honors placing sixth in foil. In epee, sophomore Vanessa Pena
placed seventh and freshman Emma Buckingham placed eighth. Junior
Dana Litowitz also made the individual final placing 14th. Heather
Rozjabek was also chosen to the all-conference Academic team.
