Hoboken, NJ - On Sunday the women’s fencing
team competed at Stevens Institute of Technology in the Eastern
Women’s Fencing Conference Individual Championship. Haverford
had six fencers named to the EWFC All-Conference team with three
on the first team and three on the second team.
All three of Haverford’s epeeists finished in the top nine.
Sophomore Melanie Preston went 12-5 for a fifth-place finish and
was named to the All-EWFC first team. Teammates Vanessa Pena ‘09
and Emma Buckingham ’10 both finished with an 11-6 record
for seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively. Pena and
Buckingham also received second team All- Conference honors. Naomi
Bocarsky (14-3) of Drew University won the epee title.
In saber, Sophomore Dana Litowitz finished a strong fourth place
with a 12-4 record and was named to the All-EWFC first-team. Freshman
Sarah Turkus went 8-8 for a ninth place finish and second team
All-Conference honors. Emma Nostrand of Drew University finished
16-0 to capture the saber individual title.
Senior Heather Rozjabek was Haverford’s top finisher going
14-1 in foil to finish in second place behind Elizabeth Oliver
of Hunter College (15-0). Rozjabek was named to the All-EWFC first
team.
Since the 2006-07 EWFC Championship were restricted to the top
three fencers from each school in all three weapons, there was
also round-robin competition for all other team members. Haverford
had a strong showing from freshmen Caitlin Fitzharris, Lara Pollack
and Prarthana Jayaram, who all began fencing this fall. Fitzharris
and Pollack finished first and second in the foil B pool and Jayaram
finished in second place in the saber pool.
The women’s team will travel to Smith College in Northampton,
Mass. This weekend to compete in the National Intercollegiate
Women’s Fencing Association Championships.
