Haverford College boasts some of the finest athletic facilities in all of NCAA Division III, including the Douglas B. Gardner '83 Integrated Athletic Center — which contains the Arn and Nancy Tellem Fitness Center, the Calvin Gooding Arena, the Thomas Glasser Hall of Achievement and much, much more.
The Alumni Field House, a 58,000 square-foot facility was resurfaced in 2008 to include four tennis courts and a 220-meter oval that comprise The Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center. The tennis surface, called Mondoten, is a multi-layer system designed to optimize shock absorption and uniform speed of play. The track, which has no coating or granules that might wear off, is made of FTX, and has been used for all Olympic competition since 1976.
The college's $1,000,000 Johnson Track, which features full field event and steeplechase capabilities, encircles one of the finest game fields in the region. Walton Field is Haverford's central game location, hosting men's and women's soccer in the fall and men's lacrosse in the spring. With a seating capacity of well over 1,000, Haverford held the NCAA Division I and III Women's Lacrosse Championships on Walton in 1988.
Completed in September 2008, Swan Field serves as a competition site for field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse as well as a practice site for the aforementioned teams and men's and women's soccer, baseball and softball. Swan Field has a synthetic FieldTurf surface used by a number of professional and collegiate teams throughout the country. The use of lights expands both practice and competition opportunities and aids in the reduction of missed class time by allowing flexibility in scheduling games and practices no longer limited by daylight hours.
Haverford's top-notch outdoor tennis courts were the scene of the 1985 NCAA Division III Championships, and the college also maintains five quality squash courts. Other top Ford facilities include the Andy Kates Fencing Salle, the John A. Lester Cricket Pavilion and the Roy Randall Baseball and Class of '95 Softball Diamonds — all touted among the area's best.
Location
Haverford's location is ideal for students with athletic interests. The 30-plus colleges in the Philadelphia area and the focus on competition within the Centennial Conference offer varied scheduling and minimum travel time. Teams travel to other regions during college vacations, but are rarely away from campus overnight or miss more than a few classes during an academic term.
Additional recreational activities are available for students whose interests lie outside Haverford's extensive offerings. Students have joined rowing or sailing clubs on the nearby Schuylkill River. Skiing and outing groups have journeyed to the Pocono Mountains and New Jersey Pine Barrens. The Main Line, along which Haverford is located, is a center of running, ice skating, racquet and equestrian pursuits.
