DELAWARE, Ohio -- Senior Grant Scott (Yellow Springs,
OH/HS) and junior Ian Ramsey-North (Narberth, PA/Friends' Central)
became their team's first pair of Top 35 All-Americans in the same
year Saturday, leading Haverford to its own highest NCAA finish,
and the best-ever by a Pennsylvania institution, in the 33-year
history of Division III cross country.
The combined individual place-finish of Scott (14th, 25:55.8) and
Ramsey-North (29th, 26:15.9) was the best by Haverford's first two
runners at nationals, improving on the respective 12th- and 39th-place
efforts of Mike Sheely (12th) and Phil Schuchert (39th) in 1982.
Sophomore Don Letts (26:38.6), junior Zach Vaslow (26:48.7) and
senior Brian Scott (26:50.7) came home in places 42-54-57 as the
Fords were edged for second, 117-118, by defending champion Calvin,
led by third-place junior Tim Finnegan (25:28.9). A pair of individual
entries, Williams College senior Neal Holtschulte (25:13.8) and
Widener University junior Macharia Yuot (25:26.5), captured the
first two places in the 8K race at Dornoch Golf Club.
By improving on their fourth-place mark of a year ago, Haverford
equaled the previous best finish by NCAA Mideast Region team, a
third-place performance by Glassboro State in 1982. The Fords' current
run of 13 consecutive trips to nationals (1993-2005) and 24 total
appearances since 1978 under 31st-year head coach Tom Donnelly both
rank third in NCAA III.
