Jim Osborne, who was head coach of the Trinity College (Vt.) women's basketball program in 1997-98 and 1998-99, was named head women's basketball coach at Haverford (Pa.) College, July 1, 2001. In his first two seasons, the Fords improved their total number of wins and won a Haverford-Bryn Mawr Tip-Off Classic Championship in 2002-2003.
Before coming to Haverford, Osborne was a consultant to former University of Vermont and current Syracuse University women's coach Keith Cieplicki during the Catamounts' America East championship and NCAA Division I tournament season of 1999-2000, then wrote an article about his coaching philosophy for the publication, Winning Hoops in 2000-01. Osborne also contributed Tournament Tips to the Winning Hoops Feb. 2002 March Madness issue and, "145 Drill; Teaching Offensive Fundamentals," in the Jan. 2003 edition.
An assistant and head coach with several Burlington-area CYO, high school, AAU and college basketball programs since his graduation from Johnson (Vt.) State College in 1975, Osborne improved the Trinity women from a 4-17 season in 1997-98 to the #1 ranking of the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) during the 1998-99 regular season. The Crusaders (21-5) lost their first-round game to NSCAA tourney host Kansas Wesleyan University, which went on to its third national championship in a four-year span in '99. Osborne's team defeated Medaille (N.Y.), 87-61, in the consolation semifinals, then finished 6th in the nation after a 10-point loss to Philander Smith (Ark.).
Osborne was assistant coach of Rice Memorial High School's undefeated (23-0) Vermont Division I state champions in 1983 and coached the Vermont Sweep under-16 girls to a 5-2 record at the AAU Junior National Tournament in 1996. His Trinity team won both the Northern Independent Conference regular season and postseason tournament titles, as well as the NSCAA New England championship, in 1999. Coach Osborne was inducted into the Johnson State College Athletic Hall of Fame in September of 2002 in recognition of his 25 years coaching women's sports.
Assistant coach Susie Rowlyk, brings an impressive background as a former Division I post player to the Haverford program. Rowlyk was named Gatorade's Delaware High School Player of the Year in 1991 (the year her high school team won the state championship). Her college career was even more impressive as she led Mount St. Mary's College, of Emmitsburg Maryland, to two Division I NCAA Tournament appearances - twice being named Northeast Conference Player of Year in the process.
Rowlyk won an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship at Mt. St. Mary's College and was named to the NEC 10th Anniversary Women's Basketball Team as well as to the Mount's 30th Anniversary Women's Basketball Team.
In addition to general coaching duties, Rowlyk will work with forwards and post players.
Assistant coach Catie Kimura returns for her second year on the Haverford women's basketball staff. Kimura finished her Haverford playing career in 2004 as the program's all-time leading three-point scorer. In 2004 she was ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA Division III for three-point field goal percentages and also holds the school record for three-point shots made in a game. Kimura will continue to work with Haverford's guards.
