#23 Muhlenberg Holds Off Haverford, 76-62
ALLENTOWN, PA - Host Muhlenberg (10-0 overall, 5-0 Centennial), ranked
23rd nationally in Division III, went on a 12-0 run over the final
2:56 of the first half en route to a 76-62 win over Haverford College
(2-8, 1-4) Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference women's basketball
action. Sophomore forward Brittany Lattisaw paced the Fords with team-highs
of 15 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
After falling behind 12-5 in the first five minutes of the game, Haverford
came back with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 16-12
lead midway through the first half. With the game tied at 22 a piece,
freshman guard Sara Cram drained a three-point basket with 2:56 left
in the half to give the Fords a 25-22 edge. The 12-0 run at the end
of the half gave the Mules the lead and some breathing room at the
break, with the score at 34-25. Haverford was able to close the deficit
to four points in the second half after senior Abby Scattergood hit
a three-pointer from Cram with 17 minutes to go, but Muhlenberg steadily
distanced itself from Haverford over the rest of the game to earn
the 76-62 win.
Cram and Scattergood scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Scattergood
also dished out a game-high five assists and tied a game-high with
two steals for Haverford. Junior center Erica Juliano scored eight
points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor off the bench for the Fords
in the loss.
The Mules were paced by Meghan Courtney's game-high 26 points on 11-of-17
shooting from the field. Courtney also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Lauren Boyle tallied 16 points in the Mules victory.
Haverford out rebounded Muhlenberg by a 43-41 margin, and made 33.3%
(4-12) of its three-pont attempts. The Mules shot 23.1% (3-13) from
beyond the arc, but forced 27 Fords turnovers.
The Fords return to action Tuesday at Centennial foe Johns Hopkins.
The opening tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
