Wellesley Defeats Haverford, 70-61
HAVERFORD, PA – Wellesley shot 50% from
the field for the game en route to a 70-61 win over Seven Sisters
Women's Basketball Tournament host Haverford College Sunday afternoon
in the tournament's fifth-place game. The Blue improve to 2-5 overall
on the season with the win, while the Fords fall to 1-4.
The Blue took an early 11-7 lead six minutes into the half, with
four points scored early by sophomore forward Jessica Duff. Wellesley
shot four-for-five from the floor during the first six minutes.
Although Wellesley's defense held the Fords to 17.6% (3-17) shooting
over the first eight and a half minutes, the Fords were able to
stay in the game by forcing nine Blue turnovers in that span, and
tied the game at 11 a piece after senior guard Abby Scattergood
sank a three-point basket. After the Fords tied the game, the Blue
went on a 6-0 run over the next 2:46 to take a 17-11 advantage.
Haverford was able to work its way back and took its first lead
since the 16:39 mark at 20-19 with 4:40 left in the first half after
sophomore guard Caroline Feldman drained a three-pointer. Wellesley
re-took the lead, and had a 33-30 edge on Haverford at the halftime
break.
The Blue extended their lead to nine points with 13:45 left in the
game after a three-pointer by sophomore Courtney Richter, but the
Fords rallied back to within five points at 54-49 after sophomore
guard Lindsay Festa sank a three-pointer with 7: 30 to go in the
game. After a couple of possessions, Haverford sophomore guard Kathleen
Ables cut the Fords deficit to one point, 55-54, after hitting a
three from the top of the circle. The Blue extended their lead back
up to five points with 3:35 remaining, and held on the rest of the
way for the 6?-6? victory.
Wellesley was led by Duff's game-high 19 points and junior Courtney
Pelley's 16 points. Sophomore Courtney Richter contributed 15 points,
and sophomore Julia Thomas had ten points in the victory for the
Blue.
Haverford was led by sophomore forward Brittany Lattisaw's team-high
18 points and nine rebounds. Scattergood and Ables had 15 and 11
points, respectively, in the loss.
Wellesley went 2-1 in the tournament, defeating Bryn Mawr on Saturday,
55-54, and losing to Vassar, 55-38, in opening round action Friday
evening. Haverford's lone win was a 54-48 win against St. Joseph
(CT) on Saturday.
