November 18, 2006 - Men's Basketball Tigers Top Fords at Equinox Classic
SWARTHMORE, PA – Wittenberg used a 14-3 run
over a 4:20 span at the end of the first half and into the second
period en route to a 68-53 win over Equinox Classic co-host Haverford
College Saturday afternoon in men’s basketball action at
Swarthmore’s Tarble Pavilion. Wittenberg junior forward
Kevin Murray led the Tigers with 17 points in the game, including
15 in the first half on four-for-four shooting from beyond the
arc. The Tigers, ranked ninth nationally in NCAA Division III,
improved to 2-0 with the win while the Fords slipped to 0-2 on
the young season.
Wittenberg got off to an early 15-7 lead with small runs of 5-0
and 8-2 in the beginning of the contest. Haverford fought back
to within 20-17 with 6:14 left in the first half after freshman
guard Matthew Palmer was fouled on a three-point attempt and made
two of three attempted free throws. With the game at 24-21 in
Wittenberg’s favor with 3:10 left in the first period, the
Tigers went on the aforementioned 14-3 run to close out the first
frame, which continued into the first 1:10 of the second half.
Wittenberg’s run was highlighted by two three point baskets
by Murray, including a buzzer-beater from forty feet to give the
Tigers a 34-24 advantage at the half.
Haverford could not overcome the ten point first half deficit
as the Tigers had the hot shooting continued throughout the entire
game. Wittenberg hit 49.0% of their shots in the game, and held
Haverford to 37.5% en route to the 68-53 victory.
Wittenberg guard Greg Hill finished the game with 12 points and
three rebounds, while senior forward Jack Hemenway finished with
10 points. Senior forward Dane Borchers collected a game-high
12 rebounds along with eight points for the Tigers in the victory.
Haverford was led by sophomore guard Greg Rosnick had a team-high
12 points along with four rebounds. Sophomore guard David Nowacki
collected a team-high seven rebounds and four assists along with
five points for the Fords in the losing effort. Senior forward
Ray Brown and sophomore guard Chaz Thomas each had 11 and 10 points,
respectively.
Wittenberg defeated Swarthmore Friday evening in the opening game
of the Equinox Classic, 57-46, while Haverford was defeated by
Trinity (Conn.) in Friday night’s nightcap, 78-50.
