CHESTERTOWN, MD – Sophomore guard Chaz
Thomas scored 19 points and collected a game-high four steals
while senior forward Ray Brown registered his third straight double-double
with ten points and game-high 12 rebounds to help lead visiting
Haverford past Washington 65-61 in Centennial Conference men's
basketball action Wednesday evening. The Fords improve to 10-11
overall and 9-6 in Centennial play with the win, while the Shoremen
fall to 3-18 and 2-13. Senior guard Mike Fratangelo also contributed
17 points in the winning effort for Haverford.
With the score knotted at 16,

first half, giving the Shoremen the 28-23 advantage at the break.
The Fords opened the second period on a 19-8 run over the first
6:22 to take the lead, 42-36. Haverford extended its lead to eight
points at 48-40 after a layup by Fratangelo with 9:49 to go, but
that's as large as the lead would get for the remainder of the
contest. Up 58-52 with just over a minute to go, Haverford's defense
forced a missed Washington shot. Thomas grabbed the rebound and
nailed two free throws to make the score 60-52. Washington forward
Joey Breslin drained a three-pointer from 24-feet to make the
game 60-55 in Haverford's favor with 42 seconds left. Fratangelo
was fouled and made one of two free throws to make the game 61-55.
Washington guard Andrew Chambers hit another three for the Shoremen,
pulling them within 61-58. Fratangelo was fouled again, but made
both attempts from the charity stripe to give the Fords a 63-58
cushion. After Breslin missed a three-point attempt, Haverford
sophomore guard David Nowacki grabbed the defensive board and
was fouled. Nowacki hit one of two free throws, pushing the Fords
lead to 64-58 with 11.9 seconds left. After a Haverford timeout,
Chambers connected on another three, making the score 64-61. Thomas
was immediately fouled and hit the second of two free throws with
3.1 seconds remaining to ice the 65-61 win.
Haverford out rebounded Washington by a 40-25 margin. The Fords
went to the charity stripe 37 times in the game, while the Shoremen
only attempted 22 free throws.
The Fords now sit alone in third place in the Centennial standings
by two games, with three games remaining in the regular season.
