Haverford Bests Washington, 72-61;
Palmer Scores Career-High 18 Points in Win
HAVERFORD, PA – Freshman guard Matthew
Palmer scored a career-high 18 points to lead Haverford College
past visiting Washington College, 72-61, in Centennial Conference
men's basketball action Wednesday evening at Gooding Arena. Haverford
improved its record to 2-4 overall, and 2-1 in Centennial play,
with the win.
The Fords got a three-point basket from sophomore guard Greg Rosnick
14 seconds into the contest to go up 3-0, and never trailed the
rest of the way. Haverford extended its lead to 13 points at the
half, leading 43-30.
In the second half, the Shoremen (1-4 overall, 1-2 Centennial)
got within eight points, 51-43, with 14:58 left in the game after
a jump shot by sophomore Todd Green. Haverford responded with
an 11-4 run over the next 9:11, giving the Fords their largest
lead of the game, leading 62-47 with 5:47 to go. Washington followed
with a 7-0 run over the next 1:56, but a three-point basket by
Haverford senior co-captain Mike Fratangelo extended the lead,
en route to the 72-61 victory.
Palmer's 18 points came on six-of-seven shooting from the floor,
including a four-for-five performance from three-point range.
Fratangelo and sophomore guard Chaz Thomas each had 13 points,
respectively, while Fratangelo also dished out four assists in
the win. Senior forward Ray Brown collected a game-high ten rebounds
and tallied nine points for Haverford. Rosnick also chipped in
with a game-high five assists and three steals.
Joey Breslin led Washington with a game-high 20 points along with
eight rebounds. Tim Kohlrus and Green each recorded double-digit
point performances for the Shoremen, registering 14 and ten points,
respectively.
Haverford shot a season-best 56.9% from the field in the game,
including 56.3% (nine-of-16) from beyond the three-point line.
Washington shot 43% from the floor in the game, and 11.1% (one-of-nine)
from three-point range. The Fords out rebounded the Shoremen by
a 33-26 margin, but turned the ball over 17 times to Washington's
12. Haverford's 72 points scored this evening are a season-high.
The Fords will travel to Centennial opponent Franklin & Marshall
on Saturday. The opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m.
