COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Haverford sophomore
guard Chaz Thomas scored a career-high 20 points, but it was not
enough as host Ursinus defeated Haverford, 70-53, Wednesday evening
in Centennial Conference men’s basketball action. Ursinus
out rebounded Haverford by a 39-21 margin in the game. The Bears
improve to 11-6 overall and 8-2 in Centennial play with the win,
while the Fords fall to 7-10 and 6-5.
The Bears tackled the Fords right from the opening tip, starting
the game on a 16-5 run over the first 6:40. Haverford was able
to cut the deficit to nine points, 20-11, with 8:50 remaining
in the first half, but Ursinus built its lead back up to 37-22
at the halftime break.
Haverford came out hot in the second half, going on an 8-0 run
over the first 2:18 which was capped off by a three-point play
by Thomas. Ursinus followed with a 9-0 run of its own just before
the midway point of the half to increase its lead back to 54-37.
The Bears used the clock to their advantage during the rest of
the game en route to the 70-53 win.
Senior forward Ray Brown had 12 points and a team-high four rebounds,
while senior guard Mike Fratangelo added six points and dished
out a team-high five assists in the loss for Haverford.
Ursinus was led by Will Furey’s 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting
from the field. The Bears also got a double-double performance
from Matt Fabian, who added ten points and 11 rebounds. Bears
guard Nick Shattuck contributed 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting
in the win.
Haverford committed 11 turnovers to Ursinus’ 18, but shot
35.8% from the floor while Ursinus shot 55.1% in the game.
The Fords return to action Saturday with a
3:00 p.m. Centennial showdown at McDaniel.
