Trinity (CT) Downs Haverford, 78-50
HAVERFORD, PA - Junior guard Patrick Martin
had a game-high 18 points as Trinity (CT) shot 52% in the first
half on their way to a 78-50 win over home-standing Haverford
in the opening round of the 2006 Equinox Classic held in GIAC
Gooding Arena Friday night.
The Bantams took an early 9-6 lead at 14:37, pounding the ball
inside early and often, forcing the Fords into a zone. Trinity’s
Robert Taylor knifed through for a lay-up at 12:30 to push the
lead to 15-8. Fords Chaz Thomas answered with a jumper at 11:29
but the Bantams’ Patrick Hasiuk came right back with a triple
to make it 21-10 for the visitors. A fast break lay-up by freshman
Paul Rowe (25-10) led to a timeout by the Fords and a 25-10 Trinity
lead.
Trinity junior Patrick Martin scored three straight jump shots,
including two long three-pointers from roughly the same spot to
give the Bantams a 39-17 advantage at half. Martin led all scorers
with 11 points on four-of-five shooting while Trinity held a slight
edge (19-17) on the glass and used pressure defense to force 13
Haverford turnovers. Fords sophomore guard David Nowacki led his
team with eight points and six rebounds.
The Bantams maintained the point spread for the first five minutes
of the second half, eventually opening up a 48-25 lead on Dunn’s
three-point play at 14:05. The Fords Doug Edelman scored two straight
buckets, the first of his college career, but Hasiuk sank a triple
at 12:50 to push Trinity’s lead to 52-29. Edelman got the
crowd going a minute later with a two-handed jam to finish off
a Haverford fast break.
The second half was plagued with fouls – the two teams combined
for 51 whistles. The Bantams continued their solid shooting, nailing
44% of their shots in the second half. Senior Michael Hoar’s
17-foot jumper at 5:30 made it 69-41, giving Trinity its largest
lead of the night.
Martin finished five for nine from the field and six for eight
from the line, while chipping in three steals for Trinity (1-0).
Hasiuk was three for five from behind the arc with 12 points,
chipping in a game-high four assists with three steals. Seniors
Kino Clarke and Russ Martin contributed nine points apiece.
Nowacki led the Fords (0-1) with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while
sophomores Brent Anderson and Chaz Thomas added eight points apiece.
Edelman finished with six points and six boards in his collegiate
debut.
Both teams will resume action in the final Equinox Classic games
at Swarthmore on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Fords will take on Wittenberg
at 1:00 p.m. while the Bantams will face Swarthmore at 3:00 p.m.
in Tarble Pavilion.
