Fords Run Over Mules, 56-39
HAVERFORD, PA – Haverford College raced
out to a 12-3 lead over the first 6:15 of play and never looked
back, defeating Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg, 56-39,
Wednesday evening at Gooding Arena. Haverford senior forward Ray
Brown registered his third double-double of the season scoring
ten points and grabbing ten rebounds in victory. The win improves
Haverford's record to 9-10 overall and 8-5 in Centennial play,
while the loss drops Muhlenberg to 5-14 and 4-9.
Haverford controlled the game from the opening tip, as Muhlenberg
never had the lead at any point in the game. The Fords jumped
out to a 24-16 advantage at the half, holding the Mules to 28.6%
shooting in the period while forcing 14 turnovers. Senior guard
Mike Fratangelo scored ten of his game-high 14 points in the second
half to keep Haverford distanced from Muhlenberg throughout the
rest of the contest. Sophomore guard Greg Rosnick tied a season-high
with five steals while adding seven assists. Sophomore guard Chaz
Thomas contributed 13 points on five-of-six shooting from the
field for Haverford.
Muhlenberg was led by Chris Huber's team-high ten points, while
Justin Fields contributed nine points in the losing effort. Jimmie
Riggins, who came into the contest averaging 9.3 points and 6.8
rebounds, was held to just two points and one rebound.
Haverford shot 50.0% from the field in the game while holding
Muhlenberg to 32.6% in the contest. Haverford out rebounded Muhlenberg
by a 34-23 margin in the game.
The last time Haverford held an opponent under 40 points in a
game was on January 17, 2004 when the Fords defeated Dickinson,
59-34. Haverford is now a perfect 6-0 on the season against Centennial
opposition at home.
The Fords, who own a two-game lead on third-place in the Centennial,
will host 20th ranked Johns Hopkins (18-2, 12-1) on Saturday at
4:00 p.m. Haverford is the only team in the Centennial to defeat
the nationally ranked Blue Jays this season, winning 64-59, at
Hopkins on January 9.
