GETTYSBURG, PA – Host Gettysburg (5-9
overall, 3-6 Centennial) went on a 16-0 second half run en route
to a 65-60 win over visiting Haverford (6-8, 5-3) in Centennial
Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon. Senior
guard Mike Fratangelo led the Fords with 16 points in the loss.
Haverford raced off to a 6-0 lead in the opening minute of play
on a three-pointer by Fratangelo and a converted three-point play
by senior forward Ray Brown. The Fords extended their lead to
eight points, 15-7, 5:07 into the half after sophomore guard Chaz
Thomas drove to the basket and made a layup. After calling a timeout,
the Bullets got back within two points at 23-21 with 3:59 left
in the half. Haverford would deny Gettysburg from tying the game,
as the Fords closed out the half on a 10-3 run to make the score
33-24 at the half.
With 10:00 to go in the game, Gettysburg’s Dan Capkin hit
a three-pointer to pull the Bullets within 44-41, however, freshman
guard Matthew Palmer hit two three-pointers and Fratangelo hit
one of his own as Haverford put together a 9-0 run over the next
1:50, putting the Fords up 53-41. The Bullets fired back with
a 16-0 run, which was ended when Fratangelo hit two free throws
with 3:01 remaining to make the score 57-55 in the Bullets favor.
Brown was able to tie the game at 57 after a made layup down low,
however, the Bullets were able to convert on ?-of-? Free throw
attempts at the end of the game to hold off the Fords for the
65-60 win.
Thomas scored all 14 of his points in the first half, while sophomore
guard David Nowacki tallied ten points and a game-high six assists
for Haverford.
Gettysburg was led by Capkin’s 16 points, and got 14 points
a piece from center Brian Sateja and guard Corey Dorsey.
Haverford shot 46.0%, while Gettysburg shot 50% from the field
in the game. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, as the
Fords made 55.6% of their three-point attempts while the Bullets
converted on 60.0% of their three-point attempts.
The Fords out rebounded the Bullets by a 28-23 margin, but turned
the ball over 26 times in the game. Gettysburg committed 21 turnovers
in the contest. The Bullets made 17-of-20 free throw attempts
in the game, all in the second half. The Fords only went to the
free throw line seven times in the game.
Haverford will return to action Wednesday evening
at rival Swarthmore. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. Box
