Rosnick Shoots Down Bullets;
Propels Fords to 53-52 Win With Three-Point Buzzer Beater
HAVERFORD, PA – Haverford sophomore guard
Greg Rosnick drained a three-point basket as time expired to propel
the Fords past visiting Centennial Conference opponent Gettysburg,
53-52, Saturday evening at Gooding Arena. Sophomore guard Chaz
Thomas chipped in with a season-high 14 points on five-of-eight
shooting in the Fords victory.
Neither team could buy a hoop early on in the contest, as it took
both teams approximately three minutes to record a field goal.
The game remained low scoring throughout the rest of the half,
as Gettysburg took a 21-17 lead into the break. Haverford shot
29.2% from the field and Gettysburg shot 35.0% at the halftime
intermission.
The Fords overcame its four point deficit when senior co-captain
Mike Fratangelo nailed a three-point basket to put Haverford up
30-28 with 15:39 remaining in the contest. Gettysburg's Dan Capkin
answered Fratangelo's three with one of his own, giving the lead
back to the Bullets.
With the game tied at 34 a piece, the Bullets went on a 11-2 run
to distance themselves from the Fords at 45-36 with 10:00 to go.
Haverford pulled all the way back within one over the next 3:21
with a 9-0 run, highlighted by a driving baseline reverse lay
up by Thomas.
Gettysburg worked its way back to a four point lead with 4:30
to remaining with the score at 50-46. Both teams exchanged baskets
and played solid defense over the next three-plus minutes. Sophomore
forward Brent Anderson hit a 18 foot jump shot with 46.3 seconds
remaining to get Haverford within two at 52-50. Gettysburg guard
Chris Nevolo turned the ball over after the Fords called a time
out, as he passed the ball to nobody as it went out of bounds.
The Fords couldn't capitalize on their next possession, however,
after the Bullets Joe Spierenburg was fouled, Spierenburg missed
the first free throw, and a lane violation nulled the second attempt.
On its last possession of regulation, Haverford drove the length
of the court and after a few passes along the perimeter, Rosnick
ended up with the ball, shot it as he faded away with a defender's
hand in his face, and found nothing but the bottom of the net
to give the Fords their only lead of the half, 53-52, as time
expired, for the victory.
Haverford senior forward Ray Brown, and Rosnick, each ended up
with ten points in the win. Brown shot five-of-eight from the
floor, while Rosnick ended up making four-of-six attempts. Sophomore
guard David Nowacki collected a team-high six rebounds for the
Fords.
Gettysburg was led by Brian Sateja's 12 points. The Bullets also
got ten points a piece from Dan Capkin and Julius Redd.
Haverford (1-4 overall, 1-1 Centennial) forced 19 Gettysburg (1-4,
0-2) turnovers in the game, while only committing 13. Both teams
shot over 42% in the contest. The Bullets held a rebounding advantage
of 32-23.
The Fords return to action on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. with
a home game against Centennial opponent Washington College.
