Fords Hold Off Red Devils, 50-48;
Brown Nets Game-Winning Basket in Final Second
HAVERFORD, PA – Reigning
Centennial Conference Player of the Week Ray Brown made the go
ahead lay up with 0.9 seconds left in the game to push host Haverford
past visiting Dickinson, 50-48, Thursday evening in Centennial
men's basketball action. The Fords improve to 6-7 overall and
5-2 in Centennial play with the win, while the Red Devils fall
to 3-10 and 1-6.
After leading 27-23 at the half, the Fords were able to extend
its lead to 37-26 with 15:11 left in the game after a made jump
shot by sophomore guard David Nowacki. Haverford went scoreless
over the next 8:45, as Dickinson was able to pull within 37-34
with 6:26 remaining. Haverford senior co-captain Mike Fratangelo
scored the next five points of the game over the next 58 seconds
to pull the Fords back up by eight, 42-34. Dickinson came back
to tie the game for the third time at 43 a piece with 1:37 left.
After a timeout, Haverford sophomore Ben McDowell made the first
of two free throw attempts. McDowell's second attempt came up
short, but Brown collected the rebound and was able to put the
ball right back into the basket, giving Haverford a 46-43 edge
with 1:13 to go. Both teams exchanged a pair of free throws on
each of its next possessions. On the Red Devil's next possession,
Kizmahr Grell tied the game at 48 with a deep three-pointer from
the top of the arc with 11 seconds left. Struggling to find an
open shot, Haverford sophomore guard Chaz Thomas threw up a three-point
shot with multiple hands in his face and four seconds left on
the clock. Thomas' shot came up short, falling right into Brown's
hands. Brown had a clear look to the basket and laid the ball
into the hoop with 0.9 seconds left on the clock. Nowacki stole
the ball from Dickinson on its inbound pass, securing the 50-48
Haverford victory.
Fratangelo contributed 11 points while Nowacki grabbed a game-high
12 rebounds for Haverford. Brown ended the game with 12 points
and ten rebounds for his second double-double of the season. McDowell
added seven points and three blocks for Haverford off the bench.
Sophomore guard Greg Rosnick dished out a game-high five assists
for the Fords.
The Fords big men held Dickinson's Tom Leszczynski to four points
in the game. Leszczynski was the third-leading scorer in the Centennial
heading into the contest, averaging 18.4 points per game. Grell
led Dickinson with a game-high 14 points along with six rebounds.
The Red Devils Mike Geosits scored 12 points in the loss.
Haverford's defense held Dickinson to 1-of-15 shooting (6.7%)
from three-point range, and 32.7% shooting from the floor in the
game. Haverford out rebounded Dickinson by a 38-36 margin, but
Dickinson forced 18 Haverford turnovers while committing 15 of
its own.
Haverford will bring its four-game winning streak to Centennial
foe Gettysburg on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest. The Fords
bested the Bullets, 53-52, back on December 2nd, in Haverford.
Rosnick hit a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to lift
the Fords past the Bullets in their first meeting of the season. Box Score
