Fords Cruise Past Crusaders, 62-49
TAMPA, FL – Haverford sophomore forward Ben
McDowell scored a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from
the floor to help lift Haverford past the University of Dallas,
62-49, in the third place game of the 2006 Tampa Shootout. Senior
forward Ray Brown contributed a game-high 15 points, while sophomore
David Nowacki grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the victory.
The game got underway with both teams battling neck and neck.
The Fords started to pull away from the Crusaders with a 9-0 run
over a five minute stretch to make the score 21-11 with just over
five minutes to play in the first half. The run was capped off
by a converted three-point play by Brown. A three-point basket
from sophomore guard Chaz Thomas and a driving lay up from Nowacki
helped extend the Fords lead to 32-20 at the end half.
Haverford increased its lead to 16 points early in the second
half as Thomas ran the court and flushed a one handed dunk after
stealing the ball off a Dallas inbound pass. Both teams were plagued
by foul trouble in the second half, as both teams were in the
double bonus by the ten minute mark. Despite going to the line
18 times in the second half, Dallas was unable to cut deep into
the Haverford lead as the Fords held on for the 62-59 win.
Sophomore guard Chaz Thomas poured in nine points while senior
guard Mike Fratangelo had eight points for the Fords in the win.
Sophomore Greg Rosnick dished out a game-high four assists for
Haverford.
Haverford out rebounded Dallas by a 33-28 margin.
The Fords defense forced 23 Crusader turnovers, while committing
17 of their own. Haverford made 19 of 25 free throw attempts (76.0%)
in the game, while Dallas only converted on 9 of 18 (50.0%) of
its free throws. Dallas never had the lead at any point in the
contest.
Brown was also named to the Tampa Shootout All-Tournament team.
In two games this weekend, Brown averaged a team-high 14.0 points
along with 5.5 rebounds per game.
The Fords (3-7 overall) will return to action at home on January
6th against Centennial opponent McDaniel. Game time is set for
4:00 p.m.
